man, i hear this bass sound on so many swedish records. so good.
see "Peter Bjorn And John's "Young Folks".. for an example.
anyone have any ideas?
just good bass playing? muted bass? i can't even get close.
a special way to mute the bass.. ?
does this even fit on this board?
thanks

it is the swedes.. thats the crazy part.
those hagstrom guy. interesting as they have no swedish artists on the artist list.. that i could pick out.
but this is a bass problem. bass, guitar.
we can do it. we can figure this out! but i can't do it alone. specialy since im a sorta bad bass player..

i don't want to hijack your topic, but i sort of doubt they would have any listed, the new hagstroms aren't even made in sweden anymore... but the sound / playability (especially for a short scale) is hard to match. you really have to have played one to know what i mean. i'm relatively certain they're all over sweden much as traynor amps are all over canada. _________________ trouble clef. |

I'm really addicted to that PB&J record. It definitely doesn't sound like a solid-body bass, it's picked for sure, and the bass sound is actually quite light on low-freq content. maybe it's a small amp?
all just speculation. the mono drums and spring reverbs add gobs of retro charm, too.

Björn uses a danelectro longhorn, have been for ages, I can't swear that's what you hear on the record though, but it sure sounds like one.
Oh and btw, the new hagströms aren't hagströms, I really hope everyone realizes that.
Sure I could buy a 60's trademark, build some guitars in korea and put a sticker on the headstock, but uhm... |

He seems to be using one of these at live shows recently:
Hagström HIIBN
http://youtube.com/watch?v=_geARbnjOHg
So I guess it's a HIIBN and a muting palm you hear.
A friend used to have one of those, they're really dead, almost no sustain what so ever, no subs, no highs, put flatwounds on and there you have it .
But to not make it gear related 'cause as always it isn't, picked and muted flatwounds should make it on almost any bass. |

that's actually my exact bass (minding condition and colour)... some of them have muting switches on the bridge...
but yes, that's what i was getting at, about vintage hagstroms. _________________ trouble clef. |
