Fuck Athens
Hi. This place is fake.
I grew up in South Eastern Michigan.
I was in the bands 55 FFER, &DATA CADET.
If you haven't heard of these bands...
think burma jehu polvo slint devo brainiac ulysess johnny maple in no particular order.
I played the guitar in 55 ffer, drums in DC, I really have no preference as to what I play, so long as I am able to levitate.
I have alot of pro recording gear, it has sort of taken over since DC quit playing, so if you are interested in geeking that way awesome.
I have practice space.
I have a new/old label that is most recently involved in putting out the record "HELMETS FOR THE KING" by the Michigan band ROME FOR A DAY.
Interested potential victims/tyrants?
Martin

Re: Fuck Athens
Hey.
Anybody.
Did I sound too bitter in the initial post?
Just frustrated to live in a town that thinks of itself like Athens does.
It's too small a place to tell the truth to a band, so everyone gets lied to. "you guys are great" There COULD be some interesting bands here, if people quit celebrating mimicry, called out the bs artists. This place reminds me of a craft show. There is very little art, but everywhere Rock stars. This place is crawling with Rock stars.
Anybody out there (in Athens or not) know what I'm talking about?
Marty

i'm not from Athens, but damn close. What's your problem with Athens? I have been hanging out up there for years and seems like an ok place to me. Thinking on moving my rig up there and putting down roots even.

You just have so much pretension here. If you don't have the same take on Athens, I'm actually happy for you. Maybe if I hadn't lived in other places... and this was all I knew....
It's just LAME. Such potential... wasted. If only the people would stop checking themselves out in the mirror out of the corner of their eyes.

Well it is pretty well known that it is easier for an Athens band to get a gig in Athens than it is for an Atlanta band to get a gig there, but it can be done. Funny though, that the clubs in Atlanta usually welcome Athens bands if they are any good.
Here it is though... it is a college town. There are college folks in college towns. Its a pretty typical attitude there as it would be in Chapel Hill or any other college town.
I think the scene is still pretty much alive, but you have to work for it, and be persistant or nothing good will ever happen to you. My humble self has played all those clubs up there, and I am from Atlanta... persistance got me those jobs and it never hurts to have them.
Honestly, I hope you werent presuming that I have only lived in one place for my entire life... I have lived everywhere from Boston to Florida and its the same in every town - you have to work work work to get yourself accepted.
Now if you want to waltz into town, set up your band and instantly be embraced by everyone in town, you better move into a smalllll town that doesnt have any established music scene...you might have a packed house every gig you play in that one horse town, but its not going to get you much farther than the county line in your career.
