DIY Speaker Stands
DIY Speaker Stands
Has anyone built speaker stands? I've seen some examples of DIY projects involving PVC pipe/sand. Anyone done this? Any advice when building for active monitors? (I assume one might need to mod the design to compensate for weight).

I used 2" ID galvanized pipe. Cut into 40" lengths (it comes in 120", so that divides it into thirds, so keep the remnant, as it'll be the same length as the other 2 - maybse usef for a matching computer monitor stand?).
HD or Lowed used to sell these precut 12" plywood circles. I mounted a floor flange on them, then threaded the pipe into it, and filled the empty pipe with sand.
You could also bolt them to the floor, Chipotle-style.

Any thoughts on how to level these speaker stands?
I haven't build any yet, but plan to. Problem is, in my apt I have very old wood flooring and it's not level. Would it be alright if I used wood shims?
Also, If I went the extra cheap route and just stacked cinder blocks, wouldn't all that extra weight transfer vibrations into the floor even better? Or would they not make it through the concrete?

after doing some research myself a while back, I decided to build a pair out of two 2x8 pieces of lumber per stand,
cut to a little over 3' for the supporting legs, with 3/4" MDF for the top and bottom plates.
Some more specifics, total price and pictures here
-> http://davidevansmcdonald.wordpress.com ... -diffusor/
also found a much more affordable, and seemingly just as effective alternative to auralex mopads via the foam factory inc.'s monitor isolation wedges,
http://www.thefoamfactory.com/acousticf ... ories.html, $9.99 for a 4-pack as opposed to $40-$45 for the damn Auralex.
I've also read of people using mouse-pads, neoprene, blue tac, and most interestingly viscoelastic gel heel cushions ->

been meaning to test these out for myself to see if they do a more effective job of decoupling.

Not cheap and not home made, but I use karaokee TV monitor stands as my speaker stands. They are height adjustable, can easily hold any speaker weight, and are on wheels. In my mastering studio, I literally roll in and out different sets of speakers to reference on. Hope this helps...best...JD!

Yep. Has locking casters, sides and back so speakers won't fall, and a strap to hold things tight.
