Sound Workshop 242A Reverb...price check and uses
Just wondering what a good price for one these is any what they sources they sound good on. I see them on a number of gear lists at studios, but have never used one myself. There's one available around here for $250, not sure if it is worth it.

I don't think that's too high or too low, that's about the going rate.
I think consensus is that it's one of the nicer spring reverb units. Demeter makes a nice one as well, but more expensive. Springs can be cool on vocals, drums (if you want a dub sort of thing), and of course guitars.

Its in good shape, and as of now I don't have any outboard reverb units (besides guitar pedals!) so I was thinking it's be a good item for the studio. I was planning on getting a digital one two down the road for some more some variety. I don't mind using plug-ins, but I rarely find myself using any delays ITB.

I have a 242, & I wouldn't say it's one of the nicest spring reverbs. Cool? Yes. Nice? No. Not mine anyway. It's easy to push to distortion (which is what I love about it), but not always so easy to get a clean reverb sound out of. I would rate the following as better in the cheapish range: lower end Master Rooms, Tapco 4400, EV Tapco 4500. Those are the ones I do own/have owned. I've also heard good things about the Furman & Fostex in the land of cheap.
Maybe my 242 is just screwy & other examples sound cleaner than mine. I don't know. Mine is a cherished piece, but not at all because it is "nice."

I love my sound workshop spring.
I use it all the time.
This Black keys thingy I just produced and mixed and everything I used it on EVERY single song. In mono, as the send to the plate... just to give the plate some freaked out resonant peaks... like an EQ'd return being sent only to the plate rather than to the 2mix. I love the sound workshop a lot. I have that, a peavy valverb, an intersound spring, and then the spring in the korg stage echo. I use the SW as the "clean and pretty" spring... it acts like an AKG BX5 a lot, which I used to have. That was a very good spring verb as well.
If yours is distorting like crazy something is wrong with it, but if it sounds great to you then leave it alone.
!
Oh, and uses?
on everything... sometimes even a little bit on the snare if you high pass the send a bunch it doesnt sproing at you....

i had a fostex a long time ago and a furman. My favorite was a Gibson spring reverb which had 2 really long permanently attached output cables. It was solid state and as far as I remember had a few transformers. It was the warmest smoothest sounding spring I ever owned. Sadly it was lost when I was out of town and my roomates got evicted. The landlord (illegaly) locked them out and disposed of the contents of the house. I alos lost an Acoustic 450 amp and 106 cab as well as an Intersound IVP bass preamp (also an Ibanez Roadstar II guitar...dont miss that one bit).
Keep meaning to get another spring unit. There isnt anything in the world of convolution or algorithms that has that sound (or IM distortion).

Thanks for the info Joel! Sounds like a pretty useful tool, even though I don't have a plate to send it too! I wish. But I like that you described it as clean sounding. I've been doing some re-amping through my princeton reverb and through a boss ME-50 for effects so it'd be nice to have something a little cleaner in my rack to add a bit of spring. Althought the re-amped princeton can sound amazing on vocals.
Thanks for the info on the other reverb units. I'll check the internets for more info.
how dare you? My Roadstar II is glaring at you right now. haha. yeah it's a clunker, but I still use mine from time to time. I've had it since I was 15, and it's been all over the country. So to me it's special.calaverasgrandes wrote: (also an Ibanez Roadstar II guitar...dont miss that one bit)

with one or two exceptions (the ATK bass) I generally hate the sound of all Ibanez pickups. The Roadstar II had lame pickups, and I wasnt really enthusiastic about trying any other pickups as the neck had more dead spots than an Oakland freeway has potholes (ba-dum-dum). And no matter what I did I couldnt get the action to a place I liked it. And I am no Satriani! I play crappy punk chords and harmonics! If the action is too much for a bass player than its a rough action (basses have a lower pitch, but a higher string tension).
About the Gibson reverb, it was badged as Gibson product, but had a very flimsy cabinet. Reminded me of the old Silvertone amps. It would feedback like hell if you actually plugged it into an amplifier at any kind of realistic volume. But on recordings it was sheer glory. I doubt I will ever get another one. Never even SEEN another one. I feel bad that I had the temerity to paint it bright red (what can I say I get bored).

***Though mine's been sitting in the rack for a couple of years, tonight's the first time I've used it- on a surf guitar record, naturally. I love it. Splashier high end than our Orban 111B, and a darker midrange resonance too. Overloads well, if you want to do that, though the neat thing about the Orban, for me, is its limiters.
Cheers!
