No more EQ magazine, magazines consolidate!

As one of the few magazines in this recording field which is not owned by an outside publishing company (the excellent Sound On Sound is also one) It's interesting to stand by and watch the field changing underneath us.

EQ Magazine will be no more, but the good news is that Michael Molenda, Sarah Jones and Craig Anderton are all cool people with good ideas. I'm curious to see what happens and how this may affect Tape Op in the future.

Remember, we're 15 years in coming up and we're not going away any time soon!

On Tuesday, NewBay Media LLC, parent company of Guitar Player, Bass Player, Keyboard, and EQ, acquired Electronic Musicianmagazine, along with Mix, DigitalContentProducer.com, millimeter.com, Reel-Exchange.com, Sound & Video Contractor (SVC) and Radio magazine, from Penton Media.

My main worry is what does it look like when so many of the magazines covering the same subjects come from the same publisher? Hmmm... -Larry

I've always said Tape Op is the only recording (or debatably, any subject) magazine worth paying for.. I'm just not interested in the random how to point the SM57 articles and gear porn that most mags are filled with. I'd like to see Tape Op grab the bull by the horns (which appears to be in progress) and move to PDF or other reader format as well, I'd refer to have my collection in PDF over all these magazines anyway...

+1...Tape Op in PDF would be the best thing ever!

I, too, would like Tape Op in pdf form for archiving the great material packed in each issue, but not as a replacement for the hard copy, as my eyes already spend way too much time looking at a computer screen.

Some day the pdf/Kindle/iPad version will exist. It's a lot of work to set up. Plus we will have more books compiling old issues out.

I am in New Zealand. A few years ago there were a whole bunch of recording magazines available here......EQ, Audio Technology, Mix, Sound on Sound, Electronic musician. Now there's pretty much only sound on Sound readily available from that bunch. We never have had Tape Op to my knowledge. I have a few old Tape Op issues that are really cool. I wish it was available in the stores here.

I prefer having a hard copy of Tape Op, but I would read it no matter what the format. It is the only real magazine left serving the engineering/producing field that has meaningful, well written content that is not just an excuse for another product catalog like the others serving the manufacturers.

Please keep up the good work. In this industry, you are the one heartfelt voice in a corporate controlled world.

Kevin @ Mix`masters in Australia has copies available - I don't know if that's any more accessible to you. I think it's mixmasters.com.au

If only there was a live-sound-centric equivalent to TapeOp.

ALL of the live sound magazines (I think there are two) really do suck. And the interviews with various people make the subjects sound like complete idiots.

Sadly, I had just subscribed to Mix and Electronic Musician. What I am receiving is more like a brochure than a magazine. I should have checked them out on a newsstand before committing.

When comparing them to a Guiter Center ad/publication, I think it they are on slightly better paper.

Tape Op and SOS appear to be the only serious magazines on the topic at this point in time, I think. I don't subscribe to SOS, but Tape Op has serious articles and diverse viewpoints from folks in the know. It has valuable information that helps me improve the music I make and record.
