8 tracks
Has there been any mention of what the 8 track tape machines are?

I could be wrong, but I'm pretty sure it's an 8 track 2" Otari. I don't know much about tape machines so that might be gibberish, but that's what I recall from the article. I think he said Vance Powell found that tape machine and a board for his studio. I should probably re-read the article.
Be well, do good work, and keep in touch.
i don't recall it being mentioned in this article, but i think he used a 1" studer in the recent past.

I went back and re-read the article. There is some conflicting information. In the Jack White article he says that the 8 track machine was built by Michael Beinhorn. I don't know much about him, when I Googled him I came up with this article: http://www.vintageking.com/Michael-Beinhorn which says that he developed the "Ultra Analog Recording Format." Not sure if Jack White's machine and this are connected.
However, in the Vance Powell article he says that there is a Studer machine in the studio, at least originally there was. My assumption is that they started with a Studer, and later got the Beinhorn.

From an upcoming article on Beinhorn we have:
I got in touch with John French at JRF Magnetics, and had him design us an 8-track headstack. What made it unique was how he was able to integrate a time code track. He made a tiny center track between tracks four and five. It was a modified Studer A800.
