I've been listening to (other than our own music for rehearsals and gigs these past few weeks, and some Motown for a DJ gig I did) nothing other than Curtis Mayfield's "SuperFly" soundtrack. I suddenly had a jones for it, went out and found it (after much searching for a CD store; and then one that actually had it in-stock), and have been eating it up.
Funky funk funkity funk, with soul beyond measure and lyrical content that is on-target even today...

Check you out summa that Black Joe Lewis then, friend.
He's not so overtly sociological - or is he.
Gang of Four is like, like, post-funk.
Soundgarden is the anti-funk.
Ain't nothin' smells mo' funky than Mr. Burnside, R.I.P. _________________ vlayman; THD; blog; TFP |

Ryan Adams, III-IV: After the first disc, I'm liking this so far; it's pretty much more rock than his recent.
Jim Jones Review, Burning Your House Down, produced by SY/Nick Cave/Grinderman drummer, Sclavunos, it ain't Thee Hypnotics, but it's pretty good, loud and raucous.
Drive-By Truckers, Go-Go Boots: I can't figure why these guys aren't as big as KOL, but then I can, and I like 'em better. Cool cover (song and jacket), too.
My Morning Jacket, Circuital: I wish it was all more like "Victory Dance", but it's pretty cool, if a little light. I mean, these guys should play more, arrange less. _________________ vlayman; THD; blog; TFP |
