There are hundreds of records being made every day in studios across the world, and you and I will never hear most of them. In many cases, this is a good thing. However, there are also some fantastic sounds being made that never see wide-spread distribution.
It seems that many of the fine people on the board are around music all day, every day, so I'm curious. What are some of your favorite sounding records from lesser-known bands/producers/engineers?
Here are a few of mine:
"In Glorious Times"- Sleepytime Gorilla Museum
"Someday This Could All Be Yours pt. 1"- The Paper Chase
"Obtanium"- Skeleton Key
"Helium"- Tin Hat Trio _________________ Turning knobs, pushing faders. |

Hey, that was cool. Kind of like if Tuck & Patti had actually been Tuck & Polly (Jean Harvey).

| Corrupted - Garten Der Unbewusstheit. The music is extreme doom metal, so it might not be everyone's cup of tea. But, the recording is stunning–huge, dynamic and natural (particularly the drums). |

I'm just gonna throw a couple on here cause immediately a giant list comes to mind haha.
Teenage Cool Kids - Denton After Sunset lp - Don't let the band name fool you, they're not teenage kids and they're not cool. Self recorded a year and a half ago and self released by the band as of yesterday. You can stream the entire album on their bandcamp. Would file next to Silver Jews, Bob Dylan, Pavement, Built To Spill and Country Teasers.

The Dukes Of Stratosphere - Chips From The Chocolate Fire Ball LP (1987) - Killer pop/psych record that for some reason was lost in obscurity. Members of XTC paying homage to the likes of The Pretty Things, The Kinks, Pink Floyd etc. The songs are killer and the production rules. Here's a track. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lEbkGEbU4l0

Frigging EPIC. Nothing quite like those 30minute doom metal songs. And the drums are gorgeous. Thanks!
If you like the thick and heavy I'd also recommend a band from Denver called Big Tattoo. A lot of their old recordings are less than stellar, but they've got an un-mastered preview of their new record on their FB (http://www.facebook.com/pages/BIG-TATTOO/128529627160044) and it sounds killer. *full disclosure* The record's being mixed by a friend of mine so I'm, admittedly, biased...
Also, just to add one more to the discussion I've recently been re-discovering "Ruin Everything" by the now defunct We Versus The Shark. _________________ Turning knobs, pushing faders. |

full disclosure: i mastered all of these, so i'm biased, but hey i can't help it if i have awesome clients.
some of these have been mentioned on the board before, but good sound is good sound, another mention's not gonna hurt.
nina violet
if you don't like this record i can only conclude that you hate music.
erich luening
tracked and mixed by matt cullen (who also tracked nina's record and played a bunch of stuff on both records). erich's got a great voice and the songs are all good front to back.
bunky moon
garges' band, wonderfully tracked by him and mixed by the inimitable mitch easter. great playing and great sonics, a real fun listen.
white laces
super cool band from richmond, va. tracked and mixed by my good friend kevin micka (whose solo project animal hospital is also well worth your time). the first tune in particular is a JAM. _________________ www.oldcolonymastering.com |

I *love* those watery sounds at the end of "Sewing Song."
That's a wonderful album. |

| David Mead, Wherever You Are - This is a great little EP released by one of my favorite obscure artists. If you like Tim/Neil Finn styled pop, it's a fantastic listen. His other albums are very good, but this one just blows me away from a songwriting and pure sonic perspective. |

Hey, EasyGo, if you're still around, what did you like about this record? I bought a used copy off Amazon and I'm listening to it... and it might grow on me.
So, if you can, describe what it does for you? I'm OK with it, it sounds like some folks who liked the dB's and Let's Active a lot, which were cool bands. But I'm missing the impact that might have been there for you when you first heard it.
Hope that sounds polite, I'm looking for perspective. |

Well, I am friends with them, did go to college with them at Purdue during their basement party years, and witnessed many of their shows when they played clubs in Chicago. They were usually super raw and not always the most polished, but the songs and energy carried them anyway.
On that album, they worked with a good producer, Dave Trumfio, who apparently pushed them to get great performances and captured their sound effectively. Front man John and violinist/background vocalist Jess always had cool harmonies, but on the album they got killer takes. I guess Landscrapes is kind of the Velmas' big bang in a way — the point in their existence where the planets lined up and everything happened as it should have. The song 'Flashlight' is a highlight and I think sums up the Velmas nicely. |

The title tune is great, but Stone and Heart Debris are also great. I actually prefer this one still to their second album.[/url] _________________ Mixing Secrets For The Small Studio -- A complete mixing method based around the techniques of the world's most famous producers. |
