I'm looking for a great midi keyboard that I can use in conjunction with propellarhead Reason. Basically I want to set it up to be playable like a nice synth that you can tweak knobs and to change filters and/or modulation in real time. I also want to be able to do drum programing with it. Weighted keys aren't that important but if the keyboard has it that's cool too.
So the check list is
-works well with Reason (I have version 3.0)
-61 or 88 keys (weighted optional)
-pitch and modulation wheels
-knobs for changing resonace, cut off, ect...
-Pads for drum programing
-easy to assign knobs and pads
what's your suggestions? _________________ My musical endeavors!

Do you have to have pads for drum programming, or could you use keys?

I suppose I could go with out pads.I could probably get a seperate midi drum pad like one of those older m-audio things that had the wood paneling for cheap. _________________ My musical endeavors!

| The Novation Remotes supposedly are decent and easy to setup with templates, but IMHO sort of expensive. I've not had good luck with M-Audio (products in general) MIDI keyboards and sold both that I had. As long as I've been using Reason I still use just a mouse and I automate movements with the sequencer...I've tried getting into playing it with a control just never got into it. |

I was in a similar boat last year, and I picked up an Akai MPK61 after reading a bunch of reviews and deciding how much I wanted to spend. It's been a good addition to the studio. _________________ natedort.com

If you can drum from the keyboard, I nominate the Roland Juno Gi, the newest andnext step-up from my beloved Juno G.
I can let you hear some sound samples sometime if you like, but the engine is killer-- really nice sounds with 16 tracks of on-board MIDI sequencing.

Those Akai's look really nice. Pretty much what I am looking for. _________________ My musical endeavors!

My good friend wrote an whole album of IDM kinda stuff using just the onboard MIDI sequencing and it is really good. There are a lot of great sounds on that keyboard and you can get real in depth with the sequencing (he took it about as far as you can I'm betting). You can here what he did here:

The only thing is recently his keyboard started falling apart. Knobs stopped
work and most frustrating of all the screen doesn't work. Something to look out for. _________________ My musical endeavors!

This should be released soon, and would seem to be what you're after:
