8-track reel to reel: Problem on one channel

I've got a problem on one channel of my Tascam tsr-8 which i'm not sure how to approach. On recording and playback the meter on one channel maxes out and there's a load of hum. There's still signal coming through, but with loads of hum. It occurs to me the problem is probably to do with a grounding issue somewhere, but i'm not sure where to start looking for the problem. Any ideas?
