Hi All,

Over the years, I've accumulated a big pile of blown speakers, and I've gotten interested in attempting to recone some of them myself. Googling about has yielded less information than I'd hoped, so I thought I'd consult the TOMB gang for thoughts on the subject, namely

- who to buy recone kits from

- how many of y'all recone your own speakers

- any other thoughts on the subject

I have a bunch of 70's blue label Fender speakers, a few 70's Celestions, and a few EVs. I also have a neighbor with reconing experience whos willing to show me how. Thanks in advance for any advice and insight!

Michael

You can buy parts (not kits) from www.tedweber.com you kinda have to know what you're doing to buy parts, they do that on purpose. Maybe your neighbor can help you dissect your speakers so you can get the right spider/voice coil/cone. I've seen kits for older JBL and EV speakers online, but I can't remember where.

The parts really aren't that expensive and that's good because a lot of times you have to improvise a little to get things to go together right.

Thanks! That's exactly the kind of thing I was looking for. I'll check it out with my neighbor and report back. I know he has experience with reconing EVs in particular, so maybe I'll buy a kit and start with that, then dive into the custom parts once my feet are wet.

Orange County Speaker Repair has long been the go-to for reconing.

I've never used them, but they're worth checking.

You might also see if there are any tutorials on instructables or youtube.

In my experience EV's are some of the easiest speakers to recone. Cleaning the basket is the hardest work. I wish I could explain how to set a voice coil in the right spot so it has the right travel and shim it so it sits right in the gap, but it really is something that has to be taught because so much of it is done by feel and experience. I had a really great teacher, once Bruce should me the ropes I never really had a problem I couldn't solve. Unfortunately not everybody is cut out for it because there were several guys in the shop that had been taught before me and never could get it right and they are excellent electronics techs so it wasn't because they were stupid or anything.

They are an excellent place to get your speakers done and if you own a shop they are an excellent place to get parts, but the only thing they sell to the public is re-foam kits for edges. They don't like to sell parts to just anybody, when I worked at the repair shop in the beginning they didn't want to sell to us because there was another shop in town that bought their stuff and they didn't want us competing with them. That was years ago, if you call them they might hook you up if you explain your situation, but they don't sell cones, spiders, and voice coils on the site.

If you want to send speakers to them to be reconed, they are definitely the place to go, those guys know their stuff.
