I just got a Mac Pro 2x2.66 and will be running Pro Tools 10. How much total RAM should I install? I usually run 24 bit 44.1, but am thinking of going with 88.2. Most projects are from 10-30 tracks, not too many plugins. I don't want to buy more than I need but don't want to end up short either. I was thinking 8-12 gigs would be good?
I know the general rule is, "as much as you can get" but I have to look out for my budget.
Advice please.
Thanks,

So split the difference.
Amend the rule to "as much as you can afford."
Can you do it empirically? Get 1 gig now, and if you're always exhausting it, add some more.
Of course, some motherboards have rules about needing all of the slots filled, so the piecemeal approach could be problematic.
I've done 24 tracks of 24/48 for ages on an old PC with 768 MB...not that that's an apples:apples comparison. _________________ "What fer?"

I have only the stock 3gb in my Mac Pro (quad 2. running Pro Tools 9, mostly 24/96 with similar size sessions. I am thinking about adding more, but for the last 1.25 years it has served me well as is.
That said it is fairly inexpensive to put 12gb in there (3 4gb sticks), and then sell the stock memory...as long as you don't buy the memory direct from Apple. |

Is it just me, or does it seem like 8 gigs ought to be plenty with that processor? You're talking about a dual-core 2.66 gigahertz proc? I think that's going to be your bottleneck with 8 gigs of RAM. _________________ Carl Keil |

I could be wrong but the way I think about it is x gB per core, so if its 2 dual core processors you're talking 4 cores, 3gB per core doesn't seem unreasonable to me. |

I spoke to a friend of mine and he said that currently since protools isn't optimized for 64 bit architecture it doesn't use more than 4 gigs of ram. I'll probably go with 8 gigs for now.
Thanks for your input folks.

I believe in Pro Tools 10 you can cache your entire session to RAM now, so that may be worth considering. |
