|
|
Found a Studer A80 1" Layback Recorder available locally. I kind of understand what it is -made for video-9.5 or so ips...... I think it would work as a 3 track as it has 3 preamps...
Question is, if I can get by with a 3 track, would this machine be a valid option? Would the sound quality be more pleasing than say a 1/2" 8 track?
Sorry, i am new to this stuff. _________________ cowboy by night |

| This Studer sounds like a pig-in-a-poke. That, coupled with you being new? I'd look for something else... |

a80's are "mod-friendly", as long as your transport is working you'll be good to go.. (If it's a standard transport I'd say pick up 5 more channels on ebay (*Check which MK version you have!!). You'll also have to buy a new headstack from JRF Magnetics.
Actually, this could get pricey pretty quickly..
Studer 1"'s are fun. I like to calibrate them with a british style CCIR mrl tape.
Keep in mind that the machine was worth tens of thousands of dollars new when things start to get expensive.
Hmm also may or may not run at standard speeds 7.5/15/30, or it may and was sync'ed to smpte to do the conversions.
Do not take this project on unless you have a great tech and lots of money. You will basically be rebuilding the entire machine and using it as a base to build a new one.
You might be able to flip it for profit, if you really want to build a tape machine. _________________ Starlab |
