Sm7's and 441's are both pretty bitchin for dynamic vocal mic's. If I was going under $500 for a vocal mic, I'd be all over an oktava mc012 w/ a Lomo M1 or M3 capsule. An at4047 would be a good counterpoint to that. _________________ ~~~~~~~~

A litttle. I recently went through my pair of NT-2's. I found a couple of design mistakes I made. The polarization voltage is too high, I rebuilt the oscillator pcb to deliver +60 volts. I removed the two ferrite beads on the outputs and replaced them with 56.2 ohm resistors. That help stabilize the mics on long cable runs and helps damp the polarization oscillator leakage into the audio path.
On one I replaced the capsule with a C-12. For the stock K-67 capsule I replaced the 470 pf caps across the 100 k resistors with 5600 pf. That tunes the response down closer to flat and removes that large 12k hz peak.
Not too hot on the C-12 conversion. The headbasket affects the tone in a not so good way, the same capsule and circuit in that cheapo MCA SP-1 is much smoother, a better head basket design. _________________ Jim Williams

i'll second the GT-66 and 4033.
Pretty sure you could get both and still be under $500.

I do like that Beta58, especially on snare (but lotsa off-axis hi-hat bleed).
Did I mention the ADK A51 V? I prefer it, for vox, to the AT4040 (what I love on OH's).
I rec'd a Shinybox 43 L that had a bad ribbon (Evilbog is bringing me down, lately). I fookt around and replaced it with - get this - generic tin-foil that I accordion'd onna long screw, and I've used it on BV's and liked it! I may leave it that way, as 2 micron shite is expensive and hard to find/work with. I s'pose I really ought just get 4 micron and be done - I can't justifry US$150 plus postage to send out to fix a mic I paid about that amount for. _________________ vlayman; THD; blog; TFP |

| I usually go between an SM7B and a (gasp!) MXL V67G. It's cheap, tacky looking, and I think it sounds cool. |

I kinda like a SM 7b through an FET Head into a clean channel, even as a mic slut, this is an interesting quasi moddedLCD/smooth type mic sound...even a 57 is cool this way |
