Hi gang - not sure if this is the best category for this quest (ion), but it's certainly not a computer or DAW issue, so, here goes ...
I'm having trouble with some new back-up drives for my Alesis HD24 XR . They were purchased from a reputable audio dealer to spec for the recorder, only 6 times the memory of the original drives (500g vs 80g) Both drives are Western Dig.
The problem, first off, seems to take issue when I mount the drive. The first 70 percent loads up lickity split, just like the old drive. But right at that point, the mounting always gets stuck in the mud, and takes about a minute and a half to fully load - when it WOULD fully load.
Which it did, at first, using the Master/single config as I understand it.( SEE BELOW) Then I formatted the disk with no problems I could see.) But when I tried to copy to it, it got about 90 percent through the copy, then booted out my new drive, sending out insidious improper dismount warnings. It also said I didn't have sufficient space for the material. I tried this twice with the same results. So I decided to see if it would accept a recording signal. No problems setting up for a new song, naming it, and putting a few seconds of bass on there.
I do understand the jumper pin issue in theory. The new drive comes with the jumper across 1/2, but the jumper config diagram shows clearly that the proper pin use for a "single/master" application (the only app usable w/ Alesis HD24 XR , says the manual) is NO PIN JUMPER at all. Interestingly enough, the original 80g drive shows the same jumper pin schematic as the new one, but the original has the jumper across pins 9/10 (far left). I boldly tried that config as well, but Using that config wouldn't allow the new drive to mount, and, in fact, after trying that one, the jumperless set wouldn't mount either. The only other detail I can site is that I noticed slightly different voltages listed on a couple of the pins.
I have asked around alot on this, and even tried to contact Alesis tek support w/o response. Any suggestions short of scrapping these ... but then, who supplies THE RIGHT drives? So few people seem to use these anymore that reliable info is tough to gleen.
Thanks for your time
Dan

My guess is that those drives are too big to be "addressed" by whatever OS that thing is running. But that's just a guess. _________________ Carl Keil |

Excellent guess! I think in "theory" the OS can handle any size, but in actual practice you're better off sticking to drives no larger than 250 gigs. _________________ Mountaintop Studios

Thanks both of you. I've had that suggested by a gear dealer as well. That manuals for the machine clearly state IN THEORY the machine can handle drives as large as 2 terrabytes,
But IN REALITY ...
Anyways, 250g tops, you say? I'll order one that size or a little smaller and see if all goes well from there. I'm hedging a recording project right now on account of no reliable backups.
I Appreciate your time ...

I had a couple of bad Western Digital IDE drives, one smoked but I did buy that one from Fry's, you know, where everything comes "fryed". I returned it. So far no problems with Maxtor.
I've used 500 gig Maxtor drives for years, never a problem. I've even used that drive out in the desert recording at over 100 degrees. It made me nervous, but it works. A solid state drive is another option, but you will need the magic sound SATA caddies to mount them. _________________ Jim Williams

| IDE drives are pretty slim pickings these days, but the model I have had success with is the 160gb Seagate from Newegg. I have understood that some drives are not so well recommended, maybe check the Yahoo group for the list before purchasing a new one. I haven't bought a SATA kit for it but that's where I'll be headed soon, and some solid state drives. |

New IDE drives are cheap and easy to get at:
www.pricewatch.com
You can find VIPower caddies cheap there too. _________________ Jim Williams

Well, it's good to know someone had success with the 500g drives, Jim. I don't know about the SATA option, and the caddies which will mount them. Can anyone tell me where I can read more about this.

Are the SATA Caddies what your referring to w/ VIPower Caddies? _________________ "The Hills are Alive with the sound of ... "

I have an HD24 and the same thing with a few drives.
EXACTLY the same symptoms.
It's dirt on the connections. Get some deoxit and spray the internal connections in the caddy, inside the HD24 bay, and external caddy connections. Then try again. _________________ Oh shut up. |

Thanks for that reference, "rythm", and Brian, that really helps to know there is specific method to this madness. I will try your suggestion, as I wish I could say my studio is one of those squeeky clean enviro's. But it aint!

Neither "was" mine when I was in the mastersound building. I thought I had some bad drives etc., but, it was just dirty intermittent connections, I still have the original drive and it works fine...intermittently.
Good luck! _________________ Oh shut up. |

Thanks for reminding me of that, Bluesman, I'll review those again.
