Another Axiom M2 user here. With an Adcom 535, they tell me all I need to know for the acoustic music I do.
Shure SR440 headphones to double check then the car stereo and a friend's boombox and Apple earbuds. _________________ Hillbilly Chamber Music

b&w matrix 805's now thru a yamaha a-s1000.
put this together 9 months ago, and i slowly quit using my powered yamaha msp-10's. i've since parked the yamaha's in favor of the 805's.

Wow. That's the same route I took about 5 years ago. I'll check stuff on the Yamaha's (actually MSP-5s) every once in a while. They've got a good tight sound. My amp is a Rotel RA-1062 for the B&Ws post a switchable Focal Sub. I have a pretty cool (now broken) Euro beat box and a pair of KRKV6 for seeing how bad things can sound (but you can get used to them, too). I hate my car stereo, but I'll put things up once in a while and turn both bass and treble way down. Stock car stereos these days are made solely for hip hop.
Beyerdynamic DT-990s haven't been beaten in my book.
EDIT: Holy crap! The two of us joined TOMB on exactly the same day. |

| Alessis Monitor 2's powered by an 80's vintage Hafler amp. I've had these speakers for about 15 years, and have gotten pretty accustomed to them. My mixes seem to translate pretty well, so I'm not in any rush to replace them. Am considering adding a pair of Avantones, though. |

Genelec 1030a's
Realistic minimus 2.5's with Rolls reference amp Ra2110 [great to see where vocals, guitars and midrange sits
1970's Ambassador boombox [gotta have a blaster]
presonus Central Station to switch.
Between the 3 of these my mixes are much easier to do and have been translating nicely..been thinking about a sub lately...not sure if it's more gear lust or based on a real need as my mastering guy [Atom Fellows] thinks low end is not an issue in my mixes.
{have real Auratones but I never liked working with them] _________________ Super 70 Studio.. where perfection is not an accident but we keep trying.

they are much smaller to start with and sound like a clock radio..just a smaller picture to hear.
I'd have to a/b them again but I find them easier to judge mids on. _________________ Super 70 Studio.. where perfection is not an accident but we keep trying.

I'd been using a pair of KRK rokit 5's, which all things considered work pretty well. But there was definitely something to be desired. Smeary bass, no real prescicion on the mids, and way too accentuated highs, even with the high end gain turned down. I worked hard to get my room sounding good and setting up the mix position...so that helps.
On my shoestring budget I found an Adcom 535 for $35 and hooked a old pair of Bose 201's that were hanging out in my garage....which surprisingly helped reveal all the midrange build up that the KRK's gloss over. Then I used a pair of old Sony micro speakers for the ugly truth on the highs. That coupled with my trusy Sennheiser HD280's and semi open HD 457's does me pretty good. Then I check mixes in my car and on some computer speakers.
Would love to get some decent actives with better accuracy and some better passives to pair with the Adcom, but until I have the funds...it'll do just fine. _________________ Rare Currency Recording

I use a pair of the original KRK's on a Crown D150-A Series II that I've had since they first came out. I know they suck, but I'm used to them I also have Grado open back SR 80's, 7506's, Sennheiser 280's, Shure 440's and the Shure SRH 840's. My son (26) has listened to them all, and said when listening to the 840's that they are almost too revealing for commercially released CD's. LOL, he has a $3000 plus system in his 4 door pickup, including dual subs...he thinks the 440's are just a bit more revealing, but the 840's take it to a whole other level...even with my ancient ears, I concur |
