| there's been a lot of love lately for Equator Audio's line of powered speakers. Check out the tapeop review of the D5 here http://www.tapeop.com/reviews/88/d5-compact-powered-monitor/. I have been wanting to check them out for some B monitors since reading that review. I currently use B&W matrix 805's powered by an Adcom GFA-555 which I cannot recommend highly enough, but might be out of your price range. If you're looking for unhyped I would shy away from the Mackies though. The MR8's were my first set of monitors and I was having to run out to the car to check mixes multiple times until I would get it right. |

Axiom M2's powered by an Adcom GFA-535. You should be able to get that for around $500. That would blow away the Mackies or the KRK's.
Also I would get nice headphones before monitors in an untreated room. I don't know if you room is treated or not, but just throwing that out there.

My approach when monitor shopping was to go for the biggest woofer size for the lowest price (I don't like using a sub and I don't know why). I ended up getting a pair of these puppies....

...For around 400 from a sweetwater sale. Normally over 500 I think.
They're great because they have a set of four switches on the back so you can make them fit pretty well in any room. Find the flattest setting and treat your room from there!

I've got KRK RP6s, the older version and a 10S sub and it's a great system. I used the RP6s alone for quite a while before I got the sub and they were great alone. How large is your control room or area? The RP8s might be too much if it's too small an area. I choose my RP6s over the RP8s for this reason as my room is only 12X20 or so.

I paid $250 shipped for my JBL 4408A's and $150 for an Adcom GFA-555. It's little bit more power than they need, I'll probably downsize to a GFA-545 but it was local and cheap.

Got a pair of D5's a couple weeks ago, but they just aren't doing it for me.
Luckily there's the 60 day guarantee.
Preferring a pair of older krk v8's for now, which can be had for around 500.00 or less used. Tighter sound and greater clarity in a side by side listen with the d5, but you do need a large enough space for them. |

I like my Yamaha MSP5's.
You gotta work them a bit to get a good mix, but they do not hype anything, and once you know them, they are consistent.

Ran them pretty hard for a week, they were pretty comparable to a soft dome tweet but didn't really bring anything I wasn't already getting a little more of.
My main issue was some chuffing in the ports well below stressful levels but admittedly a lot of what I work on is quite bass heavy.
I'll still back them- for 326.00 they blow away a bunch of other stuff i've used that was priced higher. |

Yeah, they are not great for bass-heavy material. My stuff is usually kinda rinky-dink in the bass department, so they suit me.
Folks tend to recommend a supplementary subwoofer to deal with, you know, 50hz and below (or thereabouts). |
