Man it's a bad week already when Deep Purple founder Jon Lord and Motown bass giant Bob Babbitt pass on the same day...
I have been listening to 1970's mach II Deep Purple a lot lately so this really hits home.
I even started playing my Hammond yesterday before I found out the news. Lord was a Hammond pioneer, taking it from the skating rink to the heavy rock arenas around the world.
Due to Motown's aggressive marketing and popularity I don't listen that much [they just overplayed a lot of the records and I love Stax a lot more].
None the less, I grew up with tons of Motown and it's imprinted in my soul [if a white kid from Queens can have soul]. Babbitt was one of the musicians who let us know that without creative bass parts the music would have suffered.
Both will be missed. _________________ Super 70 Studio.. where perfection is not an accident but we keep trying.

A great loss. Kitty Wells too. Also, the director of "I Love Lucy."
I look at Motown's ubiquity as an incredible "success story against all odds," so the occassional overplay of "My Girl," "Baby Love," or "What's Going On" doesn't bother me; the Motown ouevre smacks of the essence of the American Dream fulfilled. Also, it's amazing how those tunes cross generational lines; _everybody_ knows them.
If you saw "Standing in the Shadows...," you could tell Babbitt was a humble, great guy, as well as an amazing player.

Yes I saw Standing in the Shadows and Babbitt impressed me with his genuine and humble vibe. _________________ Super 70 Studio.. where perfection is not an accident but we keep trying.
