Ye olde muso's

I put this here because, well, mebbe it'll help you deal with folks like me.

When I was a young rock-n-roller, I was all about the scene, the gurrls, the party and the tunes.

When I was young ('80's) I wanted 1/2" not 1/4" (pro-tools was not common - but a big bonus - and I only got on 1" twice) and refused to punch and hadda "rock", alcohol and pot was expected and wine or hash or blow was necessary for the studio, gurrls were why I did it, and to be cool in/a part of the scene.

Now I 'm a old muso, I belong to no scene and don't wanna, women are separate, I merely drink and no longer "part-ay" in any sense, and the music is all important in all aspects.

Not entirely sure what sort of conversation you're trying to start. Do you want to talk about young, reckless rock and roll types, or older, calmed-down rock and roll types?

I don't know what I can offer to either--I was never part of a "scene," don't drink or use drugs, and have recorded to pretty much whatever was available from Cassette to 1/2" to 2" to ADAT to ProTools HD. Music was always the important part, even when the music I was making was absolute crap. Which it was, frequently. Hopefully it's better now.

Not gonna talk about the women on a public website.

I think I might feel the exact opposite to you, vman. Back when I was a kid I was pretty into it just for the music. I mean there was a scene that I was part of, but it was secondary and got in the way of (imo, back then) the music.

Now that I'm older I realize that the scene (connections to people) is the important part and the music should serve that at any cost. I really wish I could be part of a scene, but Portland rejected me like a mismatched organ.

Interesting.

For me, well, we can't even find a guitarist but my local drummer and I are now both suburban family guys, geographically and circumstantially isolated from the trendier venues and 'hoods ...

In "the scene" it was all about the next high, the next buzz, the next amp or guitar, the next gig, the next demo, the next gurrl ... That was kinda as far as it went.

The music was a given, and we practiced, but more towards the end of alla those "nexts" than for the music, itself.

Now, there is collateral pleasures like GA.S. and this forum and even the feedback of listeners but without alla that?

I'd still be doin' the music.

When I was in younger I had all kinds of time on my hands but no $. Now it's the other way 'round. Both circumstances keep me from doing as much recording as I'd like.

Well, I kinda hadda choice to make in recent years:

wife and kids, or recording and kids.


In net effect, I chose the latter.


Also, I think we found a 3rd muso (he also plays bass & guitar.)
