I get emailed engineering info from a group called GlobalSpec. This came up in one of the newsletters. If it actually works it seems pretty phenomenal. Here's a link to a video from a trade show or something.

Seems too good to be true...

That would appear to violate the laws of physics (as I understand them), but they're doing insane things with materials lately, so perhaps it really works. Anybody?

Those videos are pretty dramatic, but it looks similar to a number of membrane type absorption materials that are on the market. To do a room they are usually fairly expensive.

From a physics point of view, the energy is turned into heat by the membrane. What would be more interesting for me would be for them to have a demonstration with a SPL meter with the same box made from typical drywall construction compared to the one shown,

Hmm. Looks very interesting. I've got a problem with a wall in the studio control room (uninsulated; acts as a giant bass speaker). It's not our place (rented), so it's not as easy as "just insulate the wall." Already built a big bass-trap based on plans in Sound On Sound; absolutely zero effect.

I'm going to look into this stuff with somebody from the company (already e-mailed). If I get good news, I will report back here.

There's a similar new product called Aural Sonic–there are some videos on youtube, and they have a website. Apparently these things work. Aural Sonic, at least, is very, very expensive.

Auralex Sheetblok is $424 at MF for a 4' x 30' roll.

Well, I contacted the company via e-mail on Tuesday, and it is now officially Friday, with no response whatsoever (almost like some private gear sales vendors you meet on the Internet, and yes, even here at TO)...

So, as far as I can tell at this point, at least on the customer-service end of things, the product really is, ah, very, very silent.

^^^^^God,this sort of thing irks me. In a world where it's hard enough to get yourself to stand out, to couple a crowded market to unresponsive sales people is just too much. I guess the old adage about better mouse traps didn't include a lesson in customer service or sales.

When I built my studio I used a similar product called tuff mass.

It was twice as thick and cost a buck a square foot.

Got it here: http://www.soundown.com/AI.htm
It works very good when combined with other sound proofing techniques.

Auralex sheetblock seems like a rip off.

Did you use any of the duct wrap? I'm enclosing mine in a decoupled soffit with the usual green glue app, but something extra might be nice.

Cool ideas, guys. I'll have to keep them on-file for the future.

NEVER DID HEAR FROM "ACOUSTIBLOCK," so I guess they've lined their office computers with the stuff as well. But, we did just decide to strap an EQ across the mains, pull out 60hz and be done with it. Worked great; no more giant bass speaker wall, and no $400-per-square-foot expenses either.
