Just wanted to let TapeOppers know that we have a new video called Recording Strategies Using RealTraps posted, both on our website and on YouTube.
This video demonstrates how to get great-sounding tracks in a large, unfamiliar room, using RealTraps products, simple gear, and good engineering technique. For the video, we recorded Robb Kavjian of 1476, singing and playing 12 string guitar.
The video includes a detailed explanation of the setup of each of the 6 mics used to capture the performance, as well as the room tuning steps we used to control the sound, giving us plenty of options during mixdown.
The tracks were then mixed by Jon Wyman.
Enjoy the video! _________________ Making the world sound better, one room at a time |

That is a kind of ingenious mic placement for acoustic guitar and voice -- bi-directional XY for maximum rejection and phase coherence.
I've been becoming more and more of a fan of bi-directional mics for acoustic/vocal performance recently, although I haven't tried quite that position. I'm also a longtime fan of blending in the hard-panned bridge and fingerboard mics for a little shimmer and natural chorusing if appropriate. Depends on the material, but a strummy solo 12-string is a natural fit for it.
Anyway, especially when you consider that you're recording a cheap 12-string through some basic prosumer gear in a frigging warehouse that guitar sounds pretty damn good! A few traps really make it sound like a different space. I just wish you had recorded another pass without the traps. Now there's an A/B test that anyone could hear! _________________ Justin Colletti

Excellent. That was kind of the point of the video.... a good recording is mostly about the performance, followed by the room and good engineering technique. Quality of gear is a distant 4th, most of the time.
We did think about shooting the vid without traps, but there's no way to do that with the same performance so it's not a strict double-blind comparison. And I think most of us have some familiarity with what recordings in warehouses sound like. Plus, the video is already like 16 minutes long so we didn't want to make it even longer. _________________ Making the world sound better, one room at a time |

While it's not technically "advertising" I would say that this is promotion of marketing materials. But since those materials are relevant and useful and free, and come from a real person who's part of the community, I don't find it spammy. Personally, I don't see a difference between this and some other messageboard regular saying "Hey check out my new studio website!" or "Hey, check out my new album!" _________________ Justin Colletti

I consider the video to be educational material. In this one, we spend far more time talking about engineering technique than the virtues of our products.
Our approach is that the more people know about engineering and acoustics, the better it is for everyone (including us as a manufacturer of acoustics materials).
Hardcore marketing is not (and never has been) our style.... we're more about trying to improve the audio community any way we can. _________________ Making the world sound better, one room at a time |

RealTraps also pays for adverts in every single issue of the mag. I appreciate the information and insights you guys share.
Frankly, I wish we had a lot more participation from suppliers and manufacturers. _________________ Every calculation based on experience elsewhere fails in New Mexico. - General Lew Wallace, author of Ben Hur and Territorial Governor of NM 1878-81 |

Yeah, this was a great video and excellent public service. I have a number of panels that are not real traps and got me thinking about how to use - AND some great tips for singer/songwriter recording. The only thing it made me want to buy is multipattern/fig 8 mics to try this out! _________________ www.marionettemusic.com
