My roommate just bought a Fathead (his first mic). He might have a demo done using only it for elec guitar, acoustic guitar, rhodes and vocals.... all fathead before he goes to bed. We'll see how it sounds. _________________ Mo' mics mo' problems.

I think I could do it with Shure KSM141's. It wouldn't have a lot of mojo, or grit, but I think it could work. Especially when you start sending stuff into outboard gear during mixing. _________________ Mo' mics mo' problems.

I think I remember reading once that "Blood on the Tracks" is essentially a gob of RE20s....? _________________ "You see, the whole thing about recording is the attempt at verisimilitude--not truth, but the appearance of truth."

I got a Calrec Soundfield mic a little while ago and I guess I'd say that, but that is super cheating and pretty esoteric.
I've often thought I could make a great sounding rock record with just beyer m160s and EV RE20s, but not just one or the other. (An m160 on bass or an RE 20 on distorted guitar = ugh.) And a 4033 on distorted guitar sounds nothing like what I head coming out of the cabinet.
I guess if I had to pick one, the neutral Earthworks would probably be it, but I wouldn't love it.
It's nice to have different mics.

i think you could easily do anything with a sm7 or a 441. or if we are allowing multi patterns ... a 414 uls. _________________ the new rules : there are no rules |

Plus one for RE-55. BTW, distorted guitars no problem: get the speaker cab two to three feet off the floor; put the mic head about 12" from the center of the speaker, but pointed away at a 90-degree angle (that is, the mic grill will be perpendicular to the speaker cone, not parallel); also helps to angle the mic body so it's not parallel to either floor or walls (I usually point it up at the ceiling at about a 45-degree angle). Lovely roomy, woody sound.

any of the heavy-hitter large dynamics: RE20, SM7, 421, M88, etc. I'm pretty sure if I went and checked I could find a few records where those *were* all I used, except for ribbons or condensers on drum overheads & room mics.
this article talks about recording Creedence with almost nothing but SM56s (the predecessor to the SM57), aside from snare & cymbal condensers.

M-49 ?
Or any high quality condensor either cardio or omni?
Or, Wollensak, of course. _________________ dont turn around |
