I've never gone into a studio to record -- done all my recordings myself. They've come out pretty good, but I want this new album I'm working on to sound hugely professional and I'm not sure I'll be able to do that.
I don't know.
SO I want to find some studios that have done music in a similar vein to what I'm doing and have done stuff I think sounds great, maybe come in and try out doing it for a song or something, see what happens. If it sounds good, I'd be down to do a whole album.
I'm not tied to the idea of a studio. I'd also be willing to work with an engineer that just has gear and KNOWS HOW TO MAKE THIS SOUND BETTER.
Accurate representation of the sound of the new album:

How much money ya got?
There are about 120 recording studios in your area, all of different price ranges.
Your budget will determine where you can go.

I have no idea how much I can spend. Before I even get into budget, I want to find studios that have done work I think sounds awesome.
You said 120 studios -- that's an awfully specific number. Is there some listing you looked at? _________________ http://whereismyspaceship.bandcamp.com

I said ABOUT 120 studios. And yes, I pulled it straight out of my butt. the reality is, there are 347 studios.
Really, you're the one who needs to look at your yellow pages / Google.

sorry -- wasn't meaning to come off sarcastic. from your response, i obviously did.
yellow pages / google, yeah, but i feel like a lot of studios wont have experience with more niche genre stuff? that's why i figured i'd post here. a lot of the stuff i've heard come out of local nj studios has sounded sort of dog shit and there are a ton of them and i don't even know how to start looking. _________________ http://whereismyspaceship.bandcamp.com

Don't look for a studio, look for a good engineer. _________________ "If there's one ironclad rule of pop history, it's this: The monkey types Hamlet only once." |

Hey Talk,
My studio's just getting off the ground in Brooklyn. Maybe a good match for you.
I sent you my email in a pm.

there are many great studios in the greater ny area, and many shitty ones (some of which appear great at first)...
meet the people, listen to stuff they've done.
don't just go where it's cheapest. go where it sounds best, and the people are good.

I agree with all of this, especially what John and Roy had to add.
If you don't shop based primarily on gear or hourly rate, you'll probably be a lot happier in the end. And you might just save time and money, too.
Also: I have/do work on a lot of shoegaze stuff. Have a listen to my reel if you like, don't hesitate to reach out if you're into it.
That said, there's a lot of good engineers on this very thread. _________________ Justin Colletti
