reddi sounds great, but kinda smeary to me. Avalon is a bit more flexible, and seems a bit brighter sounding. Summit makes a nice DI too, very clean and present without being overly bright.

I usually use a UA 710, Summit 2ba-221, or a great river 2nv for bass DI, followed by a summit tla-50 or RNLA to smooth it out a bit. usually I mult the signal to a reamp and blend. Personally, buying a pre with a nice DI seems to be more useful to me, since the price isn't much greater...but if its dedicated for bass I say the summit is my pick.

i've owned the reddi, evil twin, summit td-100, radial, etc.

the reddi is the best for colored tube tone hands down. if you want super clean pristine then the avalon is for you.

that seems like a more clear description than I provided. haha

wouldn't you say the summit is in between the two? not too colored, not super clean, but a good mix. at least that's how I remember it...

The Avalon is a Killer DI.
I stopped trying to find other options after getting a couple of those in my life.

yes it's like this

most colored
reddi
summit
evil twin
radial
avalon
least colored

the avalon is so clean and pristine and "modern". be prepared, i don't care for it at all. but then again i like warm bass tones and use a 69 fender jazz with flats. if you've got a 5 string or more you'll love the avalon.

I'll put the Demeter tube DI up there as my favorite for passive basses, having tried most of the rest (except the REDDI). not a definably "colored" sounding box to my ears.

also don't discount a good passive box like the Radial JDI if you provide some kind of good clean impedance buffer beforehand.

I hear that, but I'd say every DI sound has a lack of character to me before you treat it to some processing. I find the fast, full-range, clarity of the Avalon is a great starting place. I can eq it like crazy, put it into a tube compressor, send it through an overdrive box, but I know I have something with a really generous demonstration of all the present frequencies (sometimes too generous) to start with, and come back to.

+1 on the Avalon. Just sounds great on bass. Love the Avalon love the Avalon with a sans amp with some grit to blend in even more.

an amazing local bass player sold his REDDI after trying this.

HUGE low end. pretty awesome but not cheap.

you know...the new Avalon pre/DI/reamp box looks snazzy. it's a bit pricey, but for a bass player/engineer it's a pretty handy looking doodad.

It depends on the sound you want. The Avalon's going to give a more modern, cleaner sound, and the REDDI more vintage and classic.

I reviewed the REDDI at http://www.prostudioreviews.com/reddi.htm
