Help with mixroom absorption

Post by terryb » Sat Jun 08, 2013 7:30 am

Hey there, here's my crappy little mixroom:
http://360.io/8kuA7x

I know it's terribly small and the dimensions are not good for a mixroom, but it's what I have to work with and I really just want to maximise what I have.

Now, I want to put a lot of absorption in the room in the form of oc703 including a small cloud above my mix position.
I'm just not sure how to go about lining the walls with the stuff without building studs.
I do not own this place, so permanent installalation is not an option.

Suggestions or ideas?

All the basics will apply, you will want a lot of bass trapping, and a solid Reflection-Free Zone at your listening position. You probably cannot overabsorb in a very small room like that (what are the dimensions?)

You might consider rotating your setup 90 degrees to the left, so that the closet and the door are behind you, though depending on the dimensions this may not be the best choice.

You might consider some stands for your absorbers, like these:

for low end absorption - you need thickness and air space off the wall - 6 inch panels hung 6 inches off the wall is a good start - near to corners.

look up "broadband absorbers" - a good place to start.

1 layer of 703 right against the wall doesn't do too much. (learning the hard way)
the new rules : there are no rules

You don't need to frame up the room with studs, just simply enclose absorption like OC703 into a framed panel and hang them around the room at all the key points. Having a room entirely filled with insulation on all walls wouldn't be the way to go anyways
