Discussion on Lowery, "Low," Pandora & $16.89

The original article has been referenced/posted several times in various places (I came across a blurb in The Week) - can be found here:

I understand the instinctive outrage.

The comments are interesting, and this site reverse engineers a higher initial payment: http://theunderstatement.com/post/53867 ... 16-dollars

Thoughts? I am interested in such dissections

In some countries (but not the US), Space, there is a "performance royalty," so that artists and sidemen can be paid for plays and usages of the recording even if they are not song writers.

These often account for a fair amount of "black box" royalties held in accounts in markets across the world. However, at first glance (if the pie chart is accurate), it seems Pandora's rates are a bit skewed, shall we say?

I'm going to admit to talking through my hat entirely, having not read the article... And yet, having a fair amount of knowledge in this area, and having a similarly disappointing experience with online sales and streaming (although I certainly cannot claim a direct comparison at all-- the scale is thousands versus 1 million or more!)-- I know this is confusing, but what I'm trying to say is that whatever the lame justification/whacked-out reasoning/new math used, $16 is waaaaayyyy too little to make from 1 million plays. This is the new music business paradigm in action; meet the new boss, worse than the old boss (because they've now force fed us the illusion of "freedom").
