Freq. ID for membrane bass traps

Post by LowG » Sat May 24, 2014 9:05 am

Long story short I ended up acquiring a bunch of home-made acoustic treatment but the maker of such treatment was not the seller, and the seller did not know anything about the specs.

The rigid fiberglass panels are easy enough to look at and know about, but there are 2 huge, heavy, what look to be membrane bass traps. I'm curious to figure out what frequency they are tuned to.

My best guess is to attach a piezo transducer to the surface and drive it with a speaker doing a frequency sweep, then look for a spike in the piezo output.

Any better suggestions?

Thanks -

I'd think the piezo would work. For that matter you could probably lightly touch it with your hand during the sweep to get an idea of its resonant frequency. Most likely it's range will be about an octave or two at most.
