I'm not a "money guy" so finding good and easy accounting software is always a challenge for me. I've used Quickbooks before (way more than what I need) and I'm currently using Billings, which is just ok. I've been thinking about switching to something else, but I'm not sure what's best for me.

What kind of software are you using for your freelance accounting? Do you like it? Why?

I'm a Linux dork, so I'm partial to gnucash (free software that runs on Linux, Windows, and Mac)....

Do you use an accountant to do your taxes?

You might get their advice. It might save you more than the cost of some fancy software to have your records in a format that they can easily handle.

I use quickbooks online... or more honestly, I should be using quickbooks online.. I started my business last year and just asked for my first ever extension because bookkeeping is the thing I like least about the music business.. must... get over it.

What I like:
- The idea that I can access it from anywhere.
- I can link my business checking account to it ( done ) which allow me to reconcile expense easily ( in theory. )
- I can upload Email / PDF store receipts to it so if my bias circuits go awry and the studio burns down I would still have a hope if audited.

What I don't like: paying a )(#$# monthly / annual fee for software. Also, web interfaces have still not caught up to desktop interfaces, it works but the forms are not the slickest.

I haven't really exercised it, and I have not tried other accounting software, it seems to work. I know quickbooks is kicking butt on Peachtree ( now Sage 50 ) in the desktop marketplace so when I blow up like Snoop Dog I should be able to scale up without trouble.

I'm still just emailing a PDF of every invoice and I keep a detailed spreadsheet. It's not ideal.

I'm using Audio Studio Manager for invoicing and estimates. It also lets you put in all your gear and the condition etc for record keeping. It's Mac only and available in the App Store. I have to use other accounting software for taxes but this keeps the schedule, billing, and gear organized.

Quickbooks Online. It's not cheap but versatile. We can accept credit cards through it too. It's sped up everything.

I use iCal for schedules.
Pages for the invoices.
Numbers for spreadsheets, when needed.

And for taxes, my wife actually enjoys doing that, so I have her do it.

Oh lucky lucky me.
