Studio Scam letter

Post by supafuzz » Tue Aug 09, 2016 4:49 am

I just want to bring to attention a fake request I got this morning

Here?s the text

Hello ,
This is Dobet Gnahore musical group. Just now we go through your website and willing to make our recording in your studio as from 20th of August 29th.

According to our plan,Possible we are mixing and mastering in your studio and record 7 hours daily . In your next mail , do give us total quote for the mention period and give us list and type of the instrument available . Eg , Keyboard , guitar and drums.

Thanks and Waiting for your response ,
21 Rue des Paradoux, 31000 Toulouse.
05 34 12 14 00
Dobet Gnahore.

This is a real band from France but they are playing shows in Europe on those dates so the scammers didn't do their homework or thought I would be so excited by the prospect of work. The response is directed to a hotmail account {Dobet has management etc so there would never be direct contact with the artist]

That's funny, we get the same type of emails coming in at my day job, but not music related...they are industry specific but then obviously bogus quote requests.

what's the scam? Are they looking for a gear list to shop from when robbing the place? Are they hoping you'll give them your bank account info in hopes of receiving a transfer from them?

Yeah, I've seen this in the live sound and DJ world too. Nobody I know that received one responded any further, so I don't know what they mean to achieve with this, but I have a guess. I'd wager it ends up with them kiting a bogus deposit check for the dates, that is several hundred to several thousand inflated. Then, they send a message saying they "just noticed their clerical error," and ask for a refund for the difference. Then, when you (hopefully) send a check/money order/cash/credit card payment/etc. before you find out their check is worthless, they abscond with your money...

Just guessing-- That game has been around for a long time. They keep finding new venues to exploit, just like the Nigerian Bank Scam/"Spanish Prisoner."

Yep. That and to put you on the sucker list.

My gullible and naive, not tech savvy boss/owner responded to one of these on a couple occasions, providing detailed quotes and the like..against the advice of everyone else.

Now we just delete the emails to protect him from himself.

As these are usually based in europe and beyond it's probably the fake check/refund game. Or they send you more than what you ask for and then you send them the difference.....before their check bounces

I get the ones for recording vocals. The contact can't be there, but they have a driver who can't accept credit cards, so they want to pay me with a credit card, including the driver fee, and I pay the driver. I usually like to do a few follow up emails to make them work for it, and to believe that the scam is going to work. The return email always mentions how the contact is going in for some sort of surgery. A number of times it has stated that the contact is a parent of the singers. A few times the contact claimed to be deaf. I asked "how do you know these people can actually sing if you are deaf?"

Good Times

I got a text once, similar nonsense.

I replied thusly:

We do not accept credit cards.
Our hourly rate is 250 USD.
You must deposit 50% of the full time to reserve and it is non refundable.
Look forward to working with you.

I don't know why I did not get a response LOL.
Howling at the neighbors. Hoping they have more mic cables.
