Hey Roscoe... nice to hear from you..
Yeah I know I have all the stuff I need.....you know I'm just bitching about digital sound a little.

And I only mix outside the box.. I have a1970's British all discrete console and lots of outboard..

It's just that restless perfectionist drive...

Shut up and mix!!

I hear you. I'm back to demoing on 4 and 8 track cassettes again. But that's more about workflow while I'm writing.

By the time the computer boots up and you set up mics etc..you can lose the feeling of the original thought.

I ususally don't record songs until I've worked them out for a while on acoustic guitar

Yep. For the first time in years I emailed getting into the habit of having things mic'd, patched and ready to go. I was in share spaces commercial spaces before so that was never possible.

For me it's all about staying in the writing mindset. With the computer I get into producing, arranging and editing way to quickly. With the cassette I have to put down the idea in a liniar way and I run out of tracks before my producer Brian starts to take over.

The neon clock in my studio came from Toronto! I got in the studio habit of putting things away after a session but I saw some pictures of Toe Rag studio in London and he had mics on stands on shelves all ready to go..so I'll start to do some of that as a time saver..

FWIW, I do that with a bunch but not my tube mic's.

But I'm all about "ready to go". I have all of my amps plugged into power strips and placed, I have pedal boards built and stacked on end with a dust cover and I keep my fave parallel bass recording chain all jacked in.

I can have vocals or elec guitars/bass going in under 5.

Keys are in cases on a shelf, they might take me 10 minutes to get going.

Most (not all, I keep 3-5 next to me) guitars are in another room, but racked, not cased.

Computer/monitor is never off.
bandcamp;
blog.
I mix with olive juice.
