Mixing Headphones
If u had to mix with headphones, and could only pick one pair (sub $200), which would it be?
This is my situation. I already have H280 Pro's, but I'm not a fan of closed back for mixing.
I also have Soundworks SoundID (formally Reference 4) for Headphones.
I was thinking Sony MDR 7506, cuz they're a studio standard. Then I found out that they were closed back.
I've heard the Beyer DT990 is good, but the treble can be overwhelming.
I read that the DT880 (250ohm specifically) is the perfect balanced match between the 770 and 990, but you never see anyone talking about em.
I'm lost in a sea of choices. Please help!!
Thanks.

Re: Mixing Headphones
The recording that I did that reached the broadest audience was mixed on AKG K240s.
They currently retail for about half of what they used to.

Re: Mixing Headphones
7506's are my reference phones but I don't do much mixing on them. I find their high end a valuable reference and extra useful for chasing down noise on multitracks.
I never feel confortable mixing on phones only. I know it's the only option for lots of folks who don't have a decent room or speakers but it's never a method that's worked for me. Even at low levels phones fry my ears way quicker than speakrs.

Re: Mixing Headphones
Right at $199 is a pair of Beyer DT250's, though they are closed back. That's what I have, and often mix little things on. Very flat response.
Re: Mixing Headphones
I got these HD650’s and they are pretty good. Open back. Not hyped at all.
But theyre $220, so more than you wanted to spend (but close)

Re: Mixing Headphones
ATH-M50x in the sub $200 range.
I suggest ATH-r70x open backs though. I have never liked a pair of headphones more. Most non-fatiguing I've used and mixes translate.

Re: Mixing Headphones
ATH-M50x sound really great. Plus they come with two cables (coiled and straight) and replacement parts are available.
Re: Mixing Headphones
After a cuppla pairs of 7506's bit the dust I started using Sony V-150's and have been loving them.
They are closed back and inexpensive (<US$35!), but they lack the huge bottom I feel like 7606's, etc., have and thus seem usable for longer without fatigue. I find the vinyl ear pads a little uncomfortable (as with 7506's) and the cans a little bright: I made covers just cutting and slipping on the top elastic part of some cotton socks with the result that I track in those cans (you can flip 'em one-ear DJ-style, also) and do all my detail chasing without ever feeling like my ears are numb from too many highs, as well (it's like the NS10 tissue thing).
My primary mixing is done in monitors, however.

Re: Mixing Headphones
This is what I’m using too, although I’ve admittedly never mixed a full song on headphones alone. I think I mostly just like the K240s because they’re comfortable.

I have some current AKG Studio K240s, they work great. Not loud, but they sound neutral.markjazzbassist wrote: ↑Wed Sep 01, 2021 6:04 ami use AKG Sextett K240. they are vintage version but the current version sound great too.
Howling at the neighbors. Hoping they have more mic cables.
