| Okay, so we're all very excited about getting a chance to see the Pixies for real. So while I'm reacquainting myself with all my Pixies albums (who'm I kidding, I don't need reacquainting!), what Frank Black albums should I take a listen to? I've never checked out his solo stuff. Thanks. |

| Lessee, the self-titled first one and Teenager of the Year are fine and lush and amazing. Oddballs and Frank Black and the Catholics s/t are ballsy, more minimalistic (okay, a few things are slick on oddballs) rockers. The remaining 6 or so are all a-1 too, but those mentioned above are the tops for me. If you can find "the dream is over", it's a neato bootleg of FB just on guitar, singing some songs. He rules. |

Both the self-titled one and "Teenager of the Year" are brilliant. Great production, great tunes. The guitar sound on "Czar" off the first one is my holy grail...
The Catholics stuff, I don't find quite as interesting recorded, but I've always appreciated it more live.

Teenager of the Year is a fucking brilliant masterpiece.I personally don't think he's made an album as expansive and diverse, and as someone else said, lush. So very lush.
It's in that category of albums that I can absolutely listen to from beginning to end and never have an urge to skip any one song.
Buy it. Now. |

| Dogs in the Sand is good, if only from a geek standpoint: all songs recorded live to two-track, no overdubs, INCLUDING VOCALS. If they needed another guitar part, they brought in another guitar player. |

i've always been a big fan of Pistolero but have a hard time convincing other people of its worth in the frank black catalogue. its a 'catholics' release and all recorded live to 2 track like the other one mentioned. unlike any of our live to 2 track recording though, he has the benefit of recording at sound city. the tunes are great but the words actually carry most of the record.
"stepping out the door, blowing up like a BOMB!"
what a great moment, captured beautifully by a LIVE band. how novel.

Frank Black and Teenager would be my picks, as well.
Poor Cult of Ray. It did have two good songs and one titled 'Kicked in the Taco'. Still couldn't be saved. _________________ "I have always tried to present myself as the type of person who enjoys watching dudes fight other dudes with iron claws." |

Another vote for the same. Teenager has what, 22 songs total? And they're all really good. It's one of my road trip requirements. It's perfect for a late night portion of a road trip 'cause I sing along to the whole thing and again... 22 songs.

the first 2 for sure. i just got his latest, "show me your tears" it is really really good. it gets better every time i hear it, so many good songs. i think it would be kinda cool if he did a full on multitracked BIG rock record again. i know he's got it in him. _________________ 5D Studios <-- my studio
