A/D converters under $1k

The RME/ Hammerfall Multiface seems to get a lot of people saying that the A/D/A conversion is superior to the Delta 10/10 and the Layla. I'd buy that, I've read a lot in the past about Hammerfall being one step better than the rest.

But how about the MOTU stuff on a PC platform? They just released the 828 MKII - Are Motu's converters gonna be one step better than Echo's or M-Audios?

I'll be running a sufficiently fast PC with XP on it and using the ASIO drivers.

The M-Audio stuff is cheap. I have the Duo which is USB A/D converter with 2 preamps. http://www.m-audio.com/products/m-audio/duo.php I got it for $220 online

Check out the new Panasonic converter/mic pre units. I think those are 8 in and out, lightpipe. They were practically giving them away a little while ago. Better bang for the buck than digimax units, which I think have far inferior converters. Some of the classical recording people swear by the panasonics. They have problems though, apparently, with dithering. Plus they are supposed to sound terrible at 16 bit. Something like that.

the 8 i/o lucid units are good as well. If you have the money though, the cranesong spider is supposed to be amazing. I'm not sure though if it has all the cool tape emulation stuff the new Hedd has.

Bumpin' this in hopes that someone out there has recently purchased a Motu 828 MkII for their PC daw and can comment on if it's palying with others nicely...

Curt. The 828mkii looks sweet, but it is vaporware at the moment as far as I can tell.

vaporware it is, my friends- I just found out the intem was supposed to ship early june, then june 30th, and now it looks like july 11th... hmmmm. We'll have to wait on this one. maybe I'll post the first review!

Yeah, I hate that. I don't think companies should advertise products that aren't out yet. But it might be enough to get me to upgrade past that old 2408. . . .
