Alan Moulder info??
Hello,
Does anybody have any info on some of Alan Moulder's recording and mixing techniques and philosophies? I think that man is a genius. He's worked on the Jesus the Mary Chain, My Bloody Valentine, Lush, Curve, Nine Inch Nails, Smashing Pumpkins and Ride to name a few. If anybody has info or links, please share. Here's one link that I found:

Thanks!

There is probably little info on his m.o. out there..your best bet is to listen to all the songs and get those sounds..the way you get them isn't important..its actually what they end up being, no?..i am a fan too but i think a lot of the sound of those groups is the groups, you know..

Hi Sky At No Noon,
Yeah, I totally agree with you on your post. But it's always nice to have a reference from someone whose work you admire.
Regards,
Cyrus

Re: Alan Moulder info??
i assisted Alan on a few projects back in london a few years ago,Elastica and One Lady Owner. He had a Forat F16 which he used to trigger samples to sit under the real drums.he also had a Chiswick Reach compressor that we had across the mix buss.
all this stuff was on two inch,in the days before pro tools could do more than 8 tracks......don't remember much else really.he was a super nice guy though.

If it's not distorted, what's the point??

The picture in the article looks a little hard to see, but I think the board in his studio looks like an Allen & Heath System 8. Those things are great little mixers.

Re: Alan Moulder info??
I agree that most of the great sound when he did the earlier stuff with JAMC, MBV and Ride came from working with great bands and being very patient with them. Making a client happy is a very good way to get great results out of them.
On the Allen & Heath mentioned above, I'll start a new thread on that.

Re: Alan Moulder info??
he really set a new standard for brit pop in the early 90's, didnt he?
I remember that elastica that broke over here, awesome guitar sounds on that record. How many records did that band do?

I think they did 2 full lengths and released a Peel Session too.
I really love his work, and that Apple article is interesting..He is evidently a big fan of triggered drums, the Waves L1, and AutoTune!!!

Yeah, I was just thinking about all the records he did in the nineties, and I don't think anybody got guitar sounds like him. I'm still trying.
I think Elastica's record after their big one blew chunks, though.

Re: Alan Moulder info??
I only remember the first one. Very much the brit pop orgasm for sure. That broke when I was in school, and all my friends were really into Blur and Ride, I never really got why nobody seemed to latch onto that record the same way. Crazy guitar sounds on that record and the vocal hooks were pretty nutty. A good pop record is a damn hard thing to do well.

Wow! Thanks penrithmatt for the info! I remember an article in a guitar magazine a few years back where William Reid, the guitarist from the Jesus and Mary Chain, had said that Alan put up like 4 mics or more to his amp and that he made really good use of the room. Do you remember if that's how he approached the recordings on Elastica?

The last 3 Swervedriver LPs sounded pretty nice to me.

No doubt. A great wat to gain insight. Sometimes I just like to be contrary, its my nature..and sometimes can hinder me greatly..cyrusjulian wrote:Hi Sky At No Noon,
