The US$5 James Brown

Post by vvv » Sun Jan 23, 2011 10:58 am

I hardly ever buy greatest hits records (Chris Whitley's is a great example of one I did, some of the JAMC's, the Stones' High Tides .. and Forty Licks and the Who's Meaty, Beaty ... are great arguments in favor of 'em), butt I picked up a James Brown hits CD, Icon (a series on Polydor) and I gotta say, it's tremendous.

The material is well-chosen and sequenced, the re-mastering stellar.

The only complaint I have is the lack of credits.

I mean, a Big Mac with fries or some James? No contest!

The epitome of a JB fan experience: beer money in exchange for total bliss, in tasty 3 minute installments.

There used to be off-label vinyl collections of his hits like that too.

Somewhere his ghost is smiling.

You need to grab the JB comps from the late 80s with Cliff White sleevenotes - so much killer info on those - here's one for example
http://www.discogs.com/Various-James-Br ... ase/892538

Don't think it shares any tracks with your Icon comp, but a bit of digging could probably link the Funky People tracks to the 'hits' - many would have been b-sides and recorded at the same sessions....

I'm a bit of a JB nerd sorry
