just stumbling on this now, will. as a person who always uses ribbons on guitar cabs (and loud ones, like you), i wouldn't put it that close to the grill. i'm usually at least 8-10" off the grill with all mics (ribbon or not). that said, if the ribbon is getting overloaded, it is usually more apparent in the low end/chug stuff, in my experience.
i sent mine to ENAK for a new ribbon. though looks like you could have used that info a while ago
