705 Scraps: what to do? (and other stuff)

Post by Jay Reynolds » Thu Jan 28, 2016 10:29 am

So we bought a house and I'm in the process of finishing the bedroom that is doubling as control room, office, and storage for my clothing. I think I'm going to be doing mostly mixing and writing/arranging in this space (the living room has a nice high ceiling and sounds pretty good).

Anyway, I've already built and hung a cloud. And I'm planning on hanging a bunch of these for absorption:

According to the spec sheet--scroll down on the above link--they have an acoustic coefficient that is near rockwool.

The two things I've been mulling over are:
1. What to do about the wall behind mix position:

There's not enough room for 2'x2' diffusers. Are diffusers as effective if they're 1'x2'? All the info I've found on DIY diffusers is pretty specific about the size and distribution of the 1"x1" wood pieces that get attached to the 2'x2' panel. Which leads me to believe that 2'x2' is de rigeur. And if they are less effective as 1' x 2' panels, would they contribute anything more that the open closet full of clothes and gak that is already extant in this case?

2. I've come up on some 705 scraps.

Again, I'm planning on hanging a bunch of those wood wool tiles. Maybe not hexagon, but either way that's the direction I'm leaning. But since it would be cheap and easy for me to frame those sections of 705, I'm inclined to do something with them. My first thought is to combine each to make 1' x 2' panels and hang them in the corners. My question is, at 2" thick, is that really going to get me much bass management? Am I better off just hanging them flat?

3. Also: the sides were the 705 sections were cut aren't insanely straight. I'd be inclined to have those hand-cut sides facing the frame as to have a nice even edge joined in the middle of the panel. Thoughts?

I welcome any thoughts and pointers in general as well, if anything stands out to you good folks.

Thanks!

PS - Here's a couple shots of the control room, in as much as they might be relevant to my questions.

My thoughts are rather OT, and I understand the thing about storage, but why do ya need a control room and office for yer clothing?

Lol!

The answer is simple: the Austin real estate market.

Mebbe you could use the scraps to make a portable gobo?

I made one out of Auralex and 1/2 a kick drum.

I used it recording an album for a band where they actually wanted such a thing for the vocalist - and it worked OK to moderate reflections as he was singing in a hallway.

It's even more useful in front of a loud guitar amp.

I'm not mad at that idea!

But the "tracking space" does sound pretty good. And if someone's trying to record more than just overdubs, I'd probably go somewhere else.

I'd suggest getting familiar with REW or fuzzmeasure etc. Haphazard acoustic treatment is almost more closely related to interior decorating than acoustic treatment.
A little planning will give you a big payoff in results.
