Hi everyone,

We are officially moving to Lake Arrowhead CA this summer. We are very excited!!!

I'll post some updates as we build the new, larger studio up there.

It will be an approximately 1,200 sq ft recording space, which will be very similar (but better) than Daryl's place, on YooToob. Sans egos LOL.

Nice lake views, easy going recording environment, and the ability to record full bands now.

We should be finished by the end of the year, at most.

YAY!!!

Hey Nick! It's been a while. The message board was acting prohibitively slow on all my devices for a while so I haven't been around, but my new phone seems to be letting me on at normal speeds.

Anyway, congrats! That sounds like the dream in many ways. Can't wait to come up and visit.

Small update:

We are closing this week on the house!!!

I already contacted the following, which is needed:

A topographical engineer. He will do a detailed topographical map of the entire property. Needed before Anything Else can be done. So that is step one.

A Civil Engineer/Architect. He will be in charge of making the architectural plans, and of getting the permits submitted to the County (This is an unincorporated city, so the County is where you do the construction permit stuff), and also will be dealing with the Lake Arrowhead Architectural Committee(LAWA). That group is in charge of not allowing horrid buildings from being built within the city limits, and also of maintaining the trees and general aspects of the area. Like a "city council", but not really.

Permits needed are as follows:

1. Architectural plan approval. From County and LAWA, so two permits, really.
2. Grading plan. From County.
3. Soil erosion impact. From County.
4. Retaining wall. From County.
5. Electrical. From County.

There will be no plumbing in this building, since it will be in the same property as our house. So no crazy flushing sounds to worry about LOL.

The house will have a lounge, one bedroom and one bathroom, along with a MIX room inside, on the lower level. That's right, it might end up being a two room facility. Oh the madness, the chaos!!!

I'll keep posting updates somewhat regularly, as I remember / go through them.

Update:

Found the base prefab structure the studio will be based on.

http://www.barnpros.com/barn-plans-products.aspx?itemid=1555&pagetitle=Skyline

25 ft x 48 ft which will give around 1152 sq ft of space.

This will NOT have a control room. It will be totally open. The console etc will be on caster wheels, so it can be easily reconfigured. Some of the windows will be above eye height in some places, to afford privacy. There will be a French style door (two leaves opening in the center) and no "garage door", like on the website. There will be a few moveable gobo low walls as well, to create some isolation between musicians, when needed.

The MOST COMMON COMPLAINT I have ever gotten from musicians, has always been that having a control room i.e. total isolation between the production team and the musicians, creates an unhealthy and unsustainable barrier to communications. I agree.

There will be single wall construction, with sound isolation. Thankfully, the mountain community is VERY QUIET. So there is not a crazy need for ridiculous amounts of isolation. YAY!!! There will be a floating wood floor, to isolate movement both from the outside and the inside.

More updates soon.

I've always felt that if one room is the "control room", then the other room must be the "lack of control room". And that might not be the best place to put your talent.

Agreed. So much crazy stuff can happen when people are not in direct contact.

hey just seeing this now. congrats! that skyline looks like a totally great place for a studio.

our new house came with a 20x30 workshop, which is going to be the new mastering studio...it would've already been finished except i had serious problems with it flooding, so my unsolicited advice to you is take your drainage seriously!

please do a build thread so we can see this thing go up!
