I saw one, and I know they theory behind it. If it sounds good, I have no problem buying a NS-10 speaker in a small drum. I am always trying to get better kick sounds.
Anyone?? _________________ www.seventhwavestudio.com <----looky

| just make one - any speaker will do, really it's the bracket that's more difficult. In a pinch i've used wedge monitors on their side, guitar amps speakers or duct taped a speaker to a chair at the right height. The enclosure doesn't really do much...looks good i guess and lets yamaha use existing drum hardware to mount it. |

All i know is that there was some bad math involved in its design. Of course, it was designed by a drummer...
How does a 10" snare shell "focus" a frequency with a 12' wavelength?

Yes! Thank you! What a load of crap this explanation is.
I've experimented some with different speakers as kick mics. Overall, I prefer to use a speaker not in an enclosure. My favorite so far is a cheap 12" paper cone, 8ohms. Mounted on a snare stand.
Hold on, I've been talking about this for long enough, I'm going to go take a pic....
This puts out a lot of bass, a big low thump, and not much over 200Hz. Great for putting in front of a kick and forgetting about. It's good to use a second mic on the kick for more articulation.
This "big bass approach" to using a speaker as a mic is very different from what Scott Dorsey wrote about in Recording Magazine several years back. His approach there was to use a small (3"), high impedance (intercom) speaker, to create a sound that was quite non-linear but well defined in the midrange. I haven't tried this approach yet, but I intend to.

HAd an outside engineer bring one in a few weeks ago. HUGE low thud and nothing else. Very usefull! Just for shits put it in front of an A/C bass, Useless! Go to a speaker shop and get a woofer. The subkick is still too pricey. _________________ G. Preston Boebel

I tried a 4" unenclosed woofer inside the shell and it sounded cool, kind of a compressed, sustaining sub tone.
Seems like you could turn just about any kick drum into an 808 this way. |

people who haven't tried one but say they suck don't know what the fuck they're talking about. They're great. Yeah you can take a NS-10 woofer out and duct tape it to a mic stand. or just mount a 12 inch speaker. all those techniques can work cool.
But the sub kick sounds great and packs away safely for travel.
since I work at different studios, this works great. |

Hey dood, it's cool. Nobody said they sucked. I was just voicing my disgust at their bullshit, pseduo-science marketing of the product.
