No, I didn't see any, but I'll give that a shot - thanks!

Yeah, the lacquer gets'em every time.

Another reason for cold solder joints - not having clean contacts. Keep some fine grit sandpaper around to clean all your leads and contacts. I actually have a sandpaper pencil that i made with a dremel drill bit attached to a metal dowel. Works a treat for those 'hard to reach' places.

also, it's important to heat up the contacts/metal you want to apply solder to before applying the solder... in other words, don't heat up solder and let it flow on a piece of metal that has not been heated up at all. this will create a cold solder joint. what you should do instead, is let the hot iron touch the metal for a little bit, dab a little solder to the hot iron get it going, and then let the solder rather be heated up by the metal and not the hot iron... otherwise just heating up solder on cold metal will most likely create a cold solder joint.

a good solder joint will be shiny and glossy, like my butt.

sorry if this has already been said... i don't have time to read all the other posts, but if it has not been yet covered then great! Smile

Yes, that's called tinning... a good idea before soldering anything. Say you want to solder two wires together. You should heat the first wire and apply a bit of solder. Then heat the other wire and apply a bit of solder. Then put the two wires together and heat them up and the already applied solder will flow between the two and create a nice, shiny connection with no cold joint.

Who likes a cold joint anywho?

A number of people have mentioned cleaning your tip after soldering your joint. That's well and good... but it's important to TIN your tip immediately after cleaning it. Otherwise, the tip will oxidize... leading to (a) a dirty tip and (b) reduced tip life.

You'll get the best results if you...

  1. Clean the tip
  2. Tin the tip
  3. Tin the parts you're about to join
  4. Clean and tin the tip again
  5. Join

Yes, and then clean and tin the tip again before you turn the iron off, to preserve the tip.

Goodie!
