What sounds right in certain driving conditions? Forget about styles and production.
1. MBV's Loveless is really nice when driving in fall weather. A bit contemplative.
2. The first half of Jay-Z's Blueprint makes me steer with one hand on top of the wheel.
3. You'll always spot me singing really loud to Phil Collins, No Jacket Required.
4. I tend to roll down the windows with Abbey Road.
5. Sonic Youth's Confusion Is Sex, esp. during commercials when I listen to basketball on ESPN radio. Don't ask me why. I wouldn't know.

Re: Your top 5 favorite car albums or songs.
Bauhaus: Burning from the Inside and the BBC Peel Sessions have been in the cassette deck for quite awhile now.
Road trip mandatory once-listen: Grateful Dead, American Beauty. Its the only Dead I can stand, but what an awesome album. Goes real nice with dashed yellow lines at 70mph cruising.
Any Bowie is great for sing-along. I have all of the hits, and a fair amount of the album tracks available on the mental karaoke screen.
I also dig listening to real dark drum&bass mix-tapes on the road. These work best for me with urban or urban freeway driving. Extra points for ambient breaks tossed in.
Prior to the Bauhaus kick it was Horowitz in Moscow for like a month or something, which is nice cuz it works either as background or cranked.
'Course, for local driving, I'm blessed by living in an area that has three or four awesome college stations, at least one of which is usually playing something that I want to hear. Hooray!

Re: Your top 5 favorite car albums or songs.
these are all from memories of either road trips with the family as a kid, or on various tours with the old band:
fleetwood mac-rumours
beatles-white album (favorite song-don't pass me by)
wheat-hope and adams (great when driving through a new town you've never been to, especially when it's raining, the band's hungry and you're looking for a club and or where to park the van)
I'll post more when I think of them

Barkmarket, L. Ron
Very condusive for aggressive driving needs.
Shiner, The Egg
It was stuck in my car stereo for a while. So it just
reminds me of driving.
Juno Reactor, Bible of Dreams
Trance that always reminds me of driving. Especially
track 1.

elvis costello - my aim is true ... good for singing along and consistently great songs throughout
stooges - first record ... it jams on the factory toyota stereo.
autechre - lp5 ... great for cross-country interstate travel to avoid hearing creedence and led zeppelin over and over for 12 hours straight

1) The first RATM is great for driving on twisty roads.
2) Rush's Moving Pictures. I love this album anyway and it just rocks in the car. Many playing-drums-on-the-steering-wheel opportunities.
3) Another vote for Bowie. I like Ziggy.
4) Anything by Orbital is great for late-night, gotta drive 200 miles and it's 2 in the morning trips.
5) The soundtrack to Hedwig and the Angry Inch. That album is so freakin' good.

LZ- 2
Sonic Youth- Sister
Stevie Wonder - Talking Book
Radiohead - OK Computer (when it rains)
Public Enemy- It takes a nation of millions....
Nothing beats listening to Sonic Youth (on tape, of course) when its 110 and you've no air conditioning in your '85 Ford Ranger. Man, if only I could do that for a living. AC is for heathens.

Where the hell is red bluff?
It's CA, at least you have cool weather in the morning and evenings. We're humid all day long...
Don't you get the strong sea breeze. I used to live in orange county. Right next to long beach where I played basketball.

Duc-
Red Bluff is a dink of a town about 250 miles from the state Capital. We call this part of our state Northern California. Tried to form our own state a few years back. I don't know if you've ever seen a map of California, but it's a huge state, much too big for the whole thing to get "sea breezes". We live in the Sacramento Valley, and it's hot here. HOT. Like 85 in the morning, 90 in the late late evenings. We usually get 120 at least 3 or 4 times a year. 110 is pretty normal for July/August. September is still hot. June is hot. It's just hot.
I'll admit, it's a dry heat, but damn... it's hot.

Re: Your top 5 favorite car albums or songs.
Well now, that'd be a different list entirely. In such a case mine would go:
1. Gary Numan, "Cars"
2. Sonic Youth, "Death Valley 69"
3. Prince, "Little Red Corvette"
4. Love and Rockets, "Motorcycle" (close enough, eh.)
5. the Beatles, "Baby You Can Drive My Car"

not so fast. sometimes it dips DOWN to 85 degrees or so in the wee hours of the morning when it's hot. red bluff is up north of sac i think. no sea breeze here or there, just semi-humid desert and a lot of triple digit temps. hey, at least we have irrigation, right?
car music... a lot of the new trail of the dead ep...
