Okay. So i read the 60 post thread on RAP, this year, last year, and the year before. The one were people say to do it both ways. I've read about it on this board several times ... but i still don't have it clear in my head!! I cannot find the "right" answer.
Right now i: plug the mic in, power the phantom power on, use mic, turn phantom off, then unplug mic. That just seems really dangerous, like it would be sending a sudden charge to the capsule, but i can see it being the same if it was already on and plugging the mic in as well.

So: when do you turn phantom power on to avoid messing up your mics?! And could you please explain why? Thanks!

Oh my god no! Plug the mic in first and THEN power it up! When disconnectin, wait about a minute after you've powered it off to make sure your +48V power rail capacitors have fully discharged.

Yeah. That is what i said i was doing now (maybe not so clearly). So the phantom power ramps up which is what make it safer than having it on already? Thanks!

I like that latter point. I notice on my Mackie 1640 VLZ Pro that the global light takes a while to dim after flicking the switch to 'off' - and I use that slowish fade as a queue to when, precisely, the discharge has happened. I'm assuming it was designed that way, and with this issue in mind. Either way, I use it as an indicator.

I think it was a Manley owner's manual I read that said to turn 48v on AFTER connecting and BEFORE disconnecting to avoid magnetizing stuff. I don't remember what it said would be magnetized, but i shaped up real quick.

As long as all your stuff is properly wired, it isn't really an issue. I've heard that there are boards that the BBC uses daily where the phantom is fixed so that it is on all the time. The issue is more plugging in a mic when the gain is up.
