I guess I was just freaking out on the concept, because I had read too many that blame gear lately.

Lame. I am busy and tired, which is a horrible time to post on a great forum like this.

I believe in the points made, but I didnt need to do it and sound like such a bitch!

I use drumagog.
And I only use it to reinforce the original sound.
It just sounds too freaky to replace a whole snare sound with a sample.
I also have to nudge the copied track forward a bit depending on the sample's start time.
I make my own samples of my own drums the way I like them hit.
I sample them with all the drum mics up, they sound much more real this way.
I get some lousy sounding drums to mix sometimes and this helps quite a bit.
Although I do try to avoid it unless it really needs help.
Blending the right sample and making it sound natural is the key.

Can you use drumagog to sample your own hits? Ive thought about doing that with the samppler i have in tracktion but i dont think its possible. Thanks.

Matt.

I also want to know more about this. Old timers have told me the best unit was the Eventide H3000 with the sampler. this unit can sample and then play back to a trigger or ?? some input.
What other pre midi units are there? I want to know more about the Wendel, Wendel Jr. and Linn drum for this aplication. Also, I use to have a KAWi that had trigger inputs. I've heard that some older pre midi units are actually faster and better than MIDi Can be.
What's the story on the cheap "Radio Shack" style triggrs vs. say, a Ddrem trigger.
Is triggering 'live' better than off the tape? record the sample playback or run it on mixdown??
Finally. what about triggers to use as sidechain inputs on the gates of live drums??
Can the triggers be recorded like an analog signal. Anyone actually do this sucessfully? I'm thinking to record the triggers and then on mix use them to run samples OR the input of a gate side chain.

I wanted to thank everyone for the great information. I will certainly be putting a lot of this to the test on an upcoming project.

I'll probably pick up a DM5 since it's pretty affordable and so many of you mentioned it.

Thanks again. -J
