One available rack space in my bass rig

Post by Riley » Sun May 23, 2004 1:35 am

I have the SWR Workingmans 4004 full stack. The head has one rack mountable space available in it, I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions as to what I should use this space for. Now be informed I also have the BOSS GT6B multi effects processor so I dont think I should go for effects unit but maybe a compressor would be good. IS BOSS compression in the GT6 as good as another companies rackmountable compression unit. What is the best unit for compression. Maybe a tuner would be the best, or a wireless unit. I don't know please help. any suggestions would surely be appreciated.

Thanks
Riley

Personally, I have never been happy with any Boss/Roland compressor.

Hello Riley,

I would suggest making the decision based on the following:

1) not buying anything and leaving the space empty is often a good choice.
2) If you play on small stages, don't bother with wireless. If you really need wireless, fill the space with that.
3) If you need compression, I think the dbx 160X/160XT/160A is a good, fairly affordable, one-rack-space choice for bass guitar.
4) Some may disagree, but I think rack tuners are pretty silly when used on-stage by the performer. I would much prefer a pedal-tuner which is a little more discrete. Just my opinion.

Have fun shopping.

I personally would go for a tuner or a compression unit. It mostly depends on what you are doing. I would much rather have a rack tuner than a pedal tuner, since when I'm on stage I'm flailing quite a bit and I can see a rack tuner much more. Although compression could be a useful tool depending on the style music you are playing. Although, leaving it empty would be a choice too, it's all up to you!

Here are some cool things that might work for you:

Korg DRV 2000 reverb $110

ADA MP-1 effects processor, modded by VOodoo $325

Roland GP-100 effects processor, 200 presets, + 200 user spaces $340

all are 1U!

I think there's only one true option:

The Digilog Dynamicator.

I just saw Ozomatli last night (great! but bad bad sound...) and one of them has a rack tuner, the other looked to have a floor tuner. I've got to say, the pedal tuner guy shore looked goofy all hunched over staring at the floor.

One more vote for a tuner. Or nothing.

I guess my issue with rack tuners-- while they are quite functional-- is that it's just so obvoius to the audience when you are tuning. With a pedal, you can kinda sneak it in.

Yeah I see racktuners more for a studio setting. It looks funny watching and listening to the performer tune their guitar. With pedal tuners I guess it shuts of the sound and it gets quiter. Those have been my experiences at live shows. Racktuners are noisy and pedal tuners come in and mute the sound to get a quit tuning.
For some good new music check out The Medusas

On the subject of rack tuners vs. pedal tuners, I'd like to weigh in towards the pedal tuners.

a) They can make a great "kill switch" to mute your output between songs.
b) You don't have to turn you back to the crowd to use them. Just look down, there's your tuning.

Who's hunching over to read a pedal tuner? Just look down a little. Hell you can even still talk in the mic while you're tuning with the pedal tuner.

[asshole comment]
You should store some question marks in the rackspace. Take 'em out when you need to use them!

HEY! Who forgot they bag?
