Black Widow

Post by swim shower » Thu Sep 30, 2004 10:13 am

I know this might on the edge of recording questions...
I am trying to replace my black widow speaker in my guitar amp with something really full-sounding...almost a jazzy sounding speaker. Does anyone have any suggestions?? Thanks!

its a 120W peavey with Tube preamp and a solid state power amp...

are you *playing* jazz? guitar or bass?

I don't know if it's the speaker...you may just need another amp.

Another amp is definitely a consideration but if you really want to experiment by replacing the speakers I'd recommend Eminence speakers for Jazz/Blues abilities. Eminence are my all-time fave's. Also, Jensen speakers are what you find in a lot of classic amps and are still manufactured today. Black Widow's are primarily rock speakers.

You probably already know this but you'll have to match the speakers to your amps spec's; impedence and power.

Here's a pretty cool site that has spec's on choice speakers: http://www.speakerrepair.com/Merchant2/merchant.mv/

When you say "jazz" do you mean really clean sound? If so you might try a higher power speaker like a JBL or EV.

I guess I'm looking for a cleaner sound...

I've heard Jensens mentioned before. I just am not that wsie in the ways of amps etc... thanks for the input!

I also was reccomended celestians... how are they?

I was always partial to Fender amps. I noticed recently that some of my favorite guitar players use Vox amps...what speakers do they usually come with?

thanks again!!

You may want to check out weber vst speakers. I heard of them from some amp techs that are into rock, but they make a wide variety of speakers. Check out the website & if you're not sure call 'em up & talk to Mr. Weber hisself.

Good luck

Celestions are in a lot of new Vox amps and sound really really good. I had to replace the original speaker in my 72 Princeton Reverb and I did so with a Celestion, sounds great. They do offer very clean sound but it's as much to do with your amp as the speaker itself...and the guitar.....and the player......add nauseum.

Celestian V30s
I know there not really for "jazz" but I have used them for jazzy Joao Gilberto kind of guitar sounds and they sound great!
