Depends on the style of music. For some styles, a mono overhead, a kick and snare might be the ticket. Or you might try the 'ol glyn johns method (one of my faves)...do a search for specifics, but basically you've got on mic up above the snare, one on the outside of the floor tom pointing toward the snare and the other a bit in front of the kic. Other options would be a pair of stereo room mics (a technique used famously on When the Levee Breaks), a pair over head and a mono room, overhead/kick/room, single mono overhead, etc.ataraxia wrote:what would be your set up

And then there's the question of what overhead technique you might use...xy coincident, spaced pair, etc....

I would put those mics right where they make the kit sound good through the loudspeakers..

Blanket statements like these are good ideas, but not rules...
Roomy sound: kick, snare, compressed room mic (move around a lot till it gets a color that fits your mixxx)
Tighter sound: kick, snare, overhead (move around till it "sounds good")
Very roomy sound: kick, room close up, room far away compressed

Into the mixer: overheads into channels 1 and 2 panned hard left and right (from the drummers point of view), snare on 3 pan to 11 o'clock, kick dead center on 4.
Recorded tracks: overheads into 1, snare on 2, kick on 3 if you want control over the snare otherwise L overhead into 1, R overhd into 2 and kick snare on 3 relying on EQ for any necessary changes to kick and snare.
Of course as was mentioned before you could also try the Glyn Johns method. This is what I use regardless of how much track space is available. Two LDCs, a Sm58 on snare and Audix D6 on kick...sounds great. Can do without the snare mic of course.
