My first 2", 24 track recordings!

Post by apropos of nothing » Thu Jul 24, 2003 10:29 pm

I'm jazzed. My band just went into this studio:
http://duckkee.home.mindspring.com/studio.htm
and cut an EP.

This is the track I'm thinking of putting as the lead-off:

I'm super-happy with the way this turned out.

I'd love to hear ya'll's feedback on it.

I like the first one better, I wasn't all to into the second one, the recording sound great though, keep up the good work
don't worry we don't need to track, we'll fix it later!

Those are some excellent synths on Ichabod. Nice and meaty. I particularly like the random noises near the end. Everything was nicely mixed too. Only thing I'm undecided about is the vocals. Not sure if the style is my cup of tea or not. I'll decide with future listens.

Either way, good work. You should be happy with this.
I am wangtacular.

One Minute Mile is a nice one, I like the sparseness of the opening.
Ichabod; fun synth (hey, Devo called and they want their synth back  )
But I like the first one better.

holy shit! that second song sounds like STYX! fuckin A. fuck!

i cant think of a single band out there besides you guys that sound like fucking STYX!

for that reason, i like the second song better. the first song sounds less like styx. or i guess it sounds like what i imagine a new styx album would sound like if they listened to a bunch of radiohead and ben folds five before making a record.

do you guys play this stuff out? when are you coming to san francisco? your guitarist better throw out guitar picks throughout the set (this is what tommy shaw did when i saw styx play at the dogtrack in portland 3 years ago--- by the way--- the most fun rock show i have been to EVER... well besides manowar... but really...)

TURN UP THE STYX! is this a concept album? that would make it more styx. i love prog rock! prog rock! prog rock!

I disagree. The second one had way more character and inherent interest. Not sure if this is representative of your sound, which I think you'd want a first song to convey, but i love 7/8, so I'm down with Ichabod

Wow, y'all. That's way more response than I expected. Thanks a lot!

Glad to hear the comments. Was actually kinda expecting a little more critique and a little less enthusiasm, but that's good, that's good, we'll go with it. 8)

Devo, I can see. STYX?! Oh my god, my inner punk rocker is reeling. I mean don't get me wrong, I was weaned on Paradise Theater and Pieces of Eight (on 8-track, even), but I dismissed them after one of my childhood friends (who introduced me to Sonic Youth) dismissed them as "those bastions of corporate rock." I later quoted this back to him and he was heard to respond, "I said bastions? How pompous."

Well, I guess if the shoe fits, stick it on y'r conehead. Styx it is. There's more if anyone's interested.

eeldip -- yes we do play out -- we're doing a midwest tour, Illinois, Wisconsin, Minnesota, Iowa, Missouri and Tennessee coming up here in August. We've tenatively discussed going out to the West Coast sometime next year. Its severely speculative at this point. The midwest bit is only our second spin out. We did the Southeast earlier this year.

Thanks fer the comments! Its most encouraging!

Hmmm....interesting 70s/80s clash going on here.

A mix of Dio and Vangelis?

FWIW, I like the first mix better, mainly because the synths sit better in the mix. Sorry - not a fan of the vocals. But then again, I play in instrumental bands. Recording quality is pretty cool tho...Best of luck -

I dont like the drims, but the first one is much nicer. The room you recorded in was pretty small wasnt it? This sounds like hot hot heat live. Almost exactly like them. But those bastards have really changed latetly. I dont keep up with the public music scene much but I have a feeling they're getting big aren't they?

Dio and Vangelis?!?!?! I'm trying to type buy I'm laughing far too hard. First Styx and then ... It hurts make it stop.

Yeah, the drum room at this pad's a touch small, though it could be what y'r hearing is the fact that the drummer doesn't use any toms. Kick, snare and metal. and that's it.

I'm not even aware of hot heat. I'll have to check them.

Thanks for the feedback.

I really dig the first tune, as a song in general, but I think the greatness of the song gets lost in the texture.
