Can anybody here sing like Beck?

Post by andrew embassy » Wed Jan 19, 2005 9:49 am

I wish I could, but I don't really like the way the vocals sound on this one. I sang them through an old old old mic used on a wire recorder through a tubescreamer, which is a great effect, I think it's just the way I'm singing it... Anybody got any suggestions aside from go take "Singing Like a Girl 101"?

You got the feelin'
Gonna bust to peices
You got the feelin'
Gonna bust to peices
You touch't the celiing
Under the bleachers
You got the feelin'
Gonna get the leeches
HEY! Who forgot they bag?

Some of the reviews on this song of mine said I sounded like Beck. Maybe it's the quiet vocal.

Check it out:

I'll check out your tune.

I like the guitar and bass riff.. slightly James Brown. I hear some Beck influence in there. Kind of like the midnight vultures or odelay. Those are cool major 7 chords! I like it... it's juxtaposed against the other stuff well. Flutes would be cool on this... let me know if you want me to record some for you!

Check out this classical song I just wrote. I played flute on it:

That's awesome that you hear Beck and James Brown. I love those guys. Flutes could be good; my bandmate plays flute, so we'll give it a whirl and see what they sound like.

Thanks for listening! Anybody else?

This song really reminds me of The Flaming Lips' latest. The breaks remind me of Beck style. I think your vocals are similar to some stuff Beck has done. They could be a little louder in the mix. Argh... Is this song finished? I want more. heheheh

It's not finished- the ending get's all huge and epic, kinda. Also, I'm contemplating throwing a quick little latin bridge in there- we'll see how it works.

Man, don't think you should worry about sounding like beck. I like what you have going on as it is. I think if you try to emulate beck too much, it'll just be a song trying to emulate beck. Use your own voice/style -- it's cool and you'll carve your own niche. I like the song a lot, pretty crazy and fun. I almost hear more crazy, more distorted vocals over the top of what you're singing. But that's just me, so feel free to disregard it. :-)

Good work.

I like it better with the epic ending for sure. Since I'm the type who likes epic endings to be really, really epic, I almost want to hear more going on as it gets closer to the end. Maybe some faint noisy lo-fi guitar stuff, more bleeps and bloops, something.

Also, I find myself wanting more vocals in the song now!

Sounding great so far.

I love it. I still think the vocals need to come up a bit. :) And maybe the high hat go back a tiny bit, though i really like the tone of the hats. It may be because it's an MP3, and I know those do bad things to the highs and lows.

The part where you have the break repeating over and over, I like it, though you could do some crazy leads over that. I think I hear some stuff in the background, but can't really tell. I could hear a crazy rhodes over that part.

Very nice. I don't think you need to change the vocal either, any more like Beck and it could sound like beck, whereas this still fits with what you guys do. Nice beats and rhodes especially, and the guitars are really cool, great tone, nice and tight.

I'd love to do a remix, PM me if you're interested.

...oh, and i just played some glock over the end of it for a few minutes, which leads me to think maybe some vibes in the last section may be nice, but then again, i am a sucker for vibes.

Anyway, good work.

This dude Drew Stiles came to me a few years ago with a complete 4-track album. The songs were fucking fantastic.

Sounds good to me - the vocal performance sounds a little restrained, but I may just be making that up after reading your message.

I'd suggest retracking it while drunk and/or naked.

Love the epic ending!
