G5 Fan Noise

Post by comfortstarr » Thu Jan 20, 2005 7:04 am

I think I'm going to upgrade my mac to a G5. Is there anything I should know about fan noise? Models to stay away from, etc.?

Thanks

I heard that the reason they don't have G5 laptops as yet is that they require such a huge fan cause they get so hot, they haven't figured out how to overcome that for a laptop. (sorry this doesnt answer your question)

My G5/dual 2.0 is whisper quiet. The fan only comes on when the processor is under heavy load and, even then, it's very low volume. It was like getting an upgrade to my studio going from my G4 to the G5.

i thought that one of the big selling points on the G5's is that they are supposedly liquid cooled.... is that bullshit? they still have a fan in there?

i also heard that you can't rack mount G5's sideways the way you can with G4's.... is that true as well?

they're not liquid cooled, but when my godmother first got one, I went down to look at it and hit the power button to turn it on

well, it was already on, but it was so amazingly quiet I couldn't EVEN tell

they seem to be the perfect studio machine, in that respect and others

If I had an unlimited supply of money, I'd buy one

the dual 2.5s are infact liquid cooled.

although i heard the dual 2.5s are having serious stability issues.
(not sure if it has something to do with the cooling)

my roommate has a dual 1.8
its pretty quiet, but the damn thing will heat an antire room within a couple of hours.

nice machine though
(just out of my price range)
