recording plugin movements in cubase SX
recording plugin movements in cubase SX
sometimes i get funky results from moving filters and other parameters on virtual synths in real time, that i probably could not recreate with automation.
is there a way i can record real time movements of knobs in a virtual synth to audio in cubase SX2 ?

What is stopping you from recording the automation?high tek wrote:sometimes i get funky results from moving filters and other parameters on virtual synths in real time, that i probably could not recreate with automation.

Re: recording plugin movements in cubase SX
a usb controller with plenty of knobs should help with this. hook it up, set it up in sx2, assign the knobs and twist away

i can record automation, but the only way i know of is to draw it in.sserendipity wrote:What is stopping you from recording the automation?high tek wrote:sometimes i get funky results from moving filters and other parameters on virtual synths in real time, that i probably could not recreate with automation.

when i do a bounce down of a automated track it doesnt do it real time - it renders it therefore i cant adjust parameters on the virtualInstrument as its recording.
i tried arming an audio (as well as midi midi) channel and recording my movements, but it has never worked since no audio (or midi - as in knob movements) is recorder from the vst synth.

the usb controller suggestion : my usb keyboard has no knobs
Re: recording plugin movements in cubase SX
well, here is your answer, if you want it. you can draw in the automation, but if you want to "play" the effects with your hands in real-time and have it recorded, you need a controller. They are inexpensive, and easy to setup in Cubase SX.antilog wrote:a usb controller with plenty of knobs should help with this. hook it up, set it up in sx2, assign the knobs and twist away

When you add a controller lane afterward, a little * pops up next to each control that has data on it.

well i heard you the first time, and although i appreciate your input, i wasnt asking what i need to buy to make this happen (i KNOW i can buy a controller with knobs)antilog wrote: well, here is your answer, if you want it. you can draw in the automation, but if you want to "play" the effects with your hands in real-time and have it recorded, you need a controller. my question was specificaly about recording soft-knobs in a virtual synth in reaL time
ok I think this is the answer im looking for.sserendipity wrote:

its amazing what is second nature for some - is news to others (i always wondered what that 'W' is for)
do you mean arming the 'W' on the midi track of the virtual synth?
or a audio track (to which its recording to) ??
i tried both to no avail, but im sure i just forgot to turn something on.
(waiting restlessly for you to enlighten me sserendipity)

The R is for recording, the W is for reading it back. You want to set it to R on the channel of the synth you are recording to, rather than the midi channel pointed to it.high tek wrote:do you mean arming the 'W' on the midi track of the virtual synth?

You need to turn on the W to read back automation, and the R to record it. Don't forget to turn off R when you are done, or you will continue to record any alterations you do to the VST while you are playing it back.
Re: recording plugin movements in cubase SX
thanx for the help, but im still a bit unclear about couple of things...
(are we working with JUST the midi track, or a combo of audio and midi, or two midi tracks?)
let me try to simplify:
lets say i have NI Intakt on MIDI CH1.
and i want to record the filter movements in real time.
1. do i arm and record (R&W) on the MIDI ch1 track?
and the midi data is recorded on the same midi track?
2. or are you live recording on a audio track while messing witht the intakt?
3. or are you recording the filter movements of MIDI CH1 onto ANOTHER midi channel?
thanx a bunch.
sorry for the confusion (i smoked TOO MANY hash joints last night)
cheers

Enable the record and read on the Intakt instrument channel - neither the midi channe pointed to itl, nor an audio channel.
Re: recording plugin movements in cubase SX
unfortunately this just doesnt seem to work for me.
the key strokes record as midi information, but the filter movements do not.
question:
when you do this, and play it back - can you see the filter/soft-knobs moving with the midi data?
the only thing is see moving after playback is the keys on intakt.

Yes. But midi data isn't saved on the same track as the controllers are.high tek wrote:unfortunately this just doesnt seem to work for me.

Perhaps there's a difference between Nuendo (what I'm using) and Cubase.
Re: recording plugin movements in cubase SX
your recomendations work fine with vst plug-ins (fx)
and its awesome.
but not with virtual Instruments.
did u try this with a vI ?

Your problem may be more to do with the specific instrument you are trying to automate. What is it?
Perhaps it doesn't respond to automation....
